Pros

Pay and benefits are very good, people are professional, intelligent, educated and try to do a great job. Ethics are important to the company and therefore, to the employees. Upward mobility is possible if you learn the Lockheed way, work hard, perform above expectations and work on high profile projects--where management pays attention.

Cons

The company is so large that they need lots of policies and procedures and metrics to manage the place. Sometimes metrics are one-size fits all, even when the metrics don't apply to the work you're doing. It is a very large company and is difficult to get recognized if you're doing routine, mundane work.

Pros

Really enjoyed working with the non-management staff many of whom had been there for many years. Split work week, nine hour days, so you always have every other Friday off. Work from home is super easy and just as connected to the folks in the office. Great relationship with key vendors.

Cons

Lots of bureaucracy on documentation. Simple IT change management approval can take up-to a month. The five bosses rarely got along or agreed on priorities for employees (multiple direct line managers isn't the norm at every location). When reporting on successful tasks completed for boss A it wasn't uncommon to have boss C yelling belittling remarks just to appear better than A.

Big clumsy dinosaur

Pros

Great pay, lots of different groups doing many diverse things. Hours were flexible, and a lot of very smart people work there. There were even separate technical and management career paths to choose from.

Cons

Since they're a government contractor, mediocrity rules. The emphasis is on spending as much time and money as possible, since what you're selling is hours, not product. That also leads to staff bloating, where it's better to have three people do the job of one wherever possible. Management can also be clueless. They have the attitude that a manager doesn't have to know anything about the department they're managing so long as they can look good in front of a PowerPoint presentation. They used to be very innovative, but now they sub out almost all of the innovation, and just do the project management.
