Pros

As an intern, you have flexible hours and know how Metro runs. You can see and become familiar with the various projects they control.

Cons

Even after obtaining my masters degree, I still was given menial tasks like setting up for conferences, stuffing envelops for mailings, and other things that could be accomplished by someone in high school. I understand interns are interns, but even the lower level planners were doing this. I needed to get real, professional experience, and I got very little. Also, some favoritism in hiring: if you're going to hire someone based on connections, at least get someone who's a little bit qualified for the position. For example, if they don't know what the Gold Line is or what an EIR is, they shouldn't be working in the planning department.
