Pros

Endless Opportunity, Lots of Management Positions constantly opening providing room for advancement, and really unique, interesting technology. A public company with a reliable business model and good job security.

Cons

If you interpret the above as pros, this job is for you. Lumentum's finance dep't had a pretty soul-sucking culture and expected you to work until past 7 Pm almost nightly without providing any extra overtime pay, dinner, snacks or any other incentives. During my experience, this stemmed from the upper management culture and their unrealistic expectations. Don't expect any formal training or advice, they will simply throw you to the fire and expect you to learn. When I started my role, I was told I would have 5 months to shadow the team to learn internal processes and key tasks - this quickly turned into two weeks, until they eventually placed all quarter end tasks on me with little to no training. Often times employees are setup to fail and management sees this as simply a challenge to put in front of you and watch you attempt. Management was also dishonest with me while I was there. I attempted to switch teams, management promised me a position that did not exist. They openly lied to me about offering a different role that would promote my standing in the finance department just to get me to stay a little longer.

Hire and fire

Pros

Some cool new products, smart co-workers, & “unlimited” PTO (vacation)

Cons

Some roles may require extensive long-duration over-seas travel (4-6 weeks at a time) to vendor site(s) during product line bring-up at factory. Lots of management & employee turn-over: seems like every few years a new manager is brought in to “fix” issues, where they either hire a new team, or bring a few favorites, and lay-off everyone else, after a year or two. Management seems to thrive on fire-drills, scapegoating, and rule-by-fear with frequent layoffs.

Mediocrity Abounds

Pros

Good initial COVID response for fabs. Lots of opportunities to take on different projects.

Cons

Annual layoffs that favor interns and longevity and ignores skills, experience and accomplishment. They constantly are looking for the next new thing in the market, but are not an attractor of talent. Look to the failure of the Coherent acquisition to better understand the need to purchase for new products rather than create a new line of business or improve what they have. Low pay, no promotions. No incentives for new hires of all ages, but plenty for interns. Old boy network, evidenced by joking on all hands. No idea how to work with the global locations.
