Pros

Some of the pros would be access to the amazing galleries, free admission to any and all events that are going on, and the chance to meet great artists and make new friends. Also: as a small institution still, you get the chance to interact with every person on staff, including the museum director, Joe.

Cons

As an intern at MM, you are basically expected to do all the things they aren't willing to pay a real employee to do. Although you do get free housing (in a janky house nearby) and a weekly stipend of $100/week, you don't really get the chance to learn new skills or grow as an intellectual. You are also expected to drop everything to do random crap like ticketing at a weekend event, just because you are an intern.

A disappointing experience with lack of growth

Pros

You get some exposure to art.

Cons

The Communications Department at Mass MoCA suffers from a serious lack of leadership and direction. Systems and workflows are outdated, inefficient and resistant to improvement which makes even basic tasks more difficult than they need to be. There is little investment in staff development, and opportunities for growth or mentorship are essentially nonexistent. Morale is low, and it’s not hard to see why. The staff is underpaid, overextended, and generally unhappy. Support is minimal, expectations are confusing, and accountability at the leadership level is noticeably absent. Transparency is also an issue. On my first day, I was informed that I would not receive holidays off—something that was never mentioned during the hiring process and absolutely should have been disclosed upfront. If you are looking for support, professional growth, or a healthy work environment, this is not the place. Proceed with caution.

Pros

The campus and art installations are undeniably beautiful and inspiring. Some colleagues are passionate and genuinely care about the mission. Opportunity to work on interesting projects in the art world.

Cons

Management lacks clear direction and often appears disconnected from the day-to-day realities of staff. Pay is well below industry standards for the amount of work and stress involved. Very little room for career advancement, with few opportunities for professional development or internal promotions. Work-life balance is almost nonexistent during event-heavy periods, with unrealistic expectations placed on employees. High turnover rate due to burnout and dissatisfaction, creating constant disruptions and a lack of continuity in teams.
