while technical groups do interesting work, the organization itself operates in the dark ages

many intelligent employees and interesting research technologies.

Cons

A trip back into the past ( when not all was good ). Some departments operate like databases and user interfaces were never invented, nor was there ever a woman's movement. VERY hierarchical...and while they say it is a flat organization, the layers are more like a caste system.

Excellent place for cutting edge technology

Pros

Some of the best mix of the benefits of academia and Industry. Risky, interesting work, without the constant need to publish. Generally well-funded projects. Very flat hierarchy, with management promoted from the engineering ranks.

Cons

Publishing and conferences quite difficult due to release review process. Management that comes from engineering may not have the best managerial skills. Flat hierarchy makes advancement a bit mysterious.

Thank you for posting this review. I am pleased that you raised the mix of academia and industry as that is one of the truly unique features of the Laboratory. Preparing employees for management roles is an ongoing challenge that is being actively reviewed. While we must operate within the framework of classified information protection, we encourage participation in technology forae and publishing in appropriate media.

Thanks for your insights. As a Federally Funded Research and Development Center we do have a focus on defense related solutions. We are able to offer technical opportunities from advanced microelectronic device research and development, to opportunities in complex large, space based systems. Our Cyber Security programs are a big growth area. In that respect our focus on defense work is not really a limitation. Much of the technology that has been developed at the Laboratory has been transferred to industry. Because of the nature of our work, security is a major focus and we are recognized as industry leaders for our security systems.
