Pros

MIT is constantly pushing the boundaries of what exists and making the impossible possible. I am constantly learning new skills in design and learning sciences while also putting my Ph.D. to work (each digital learning lab fellow designs digital education in their field of expertise). The job is also very flexible. I think through problems better when I am walking, so whenever I am stuck on something, I just get up from my desk and go for a walk. My boss sits one desk away from me and does not mind at all. If you care about providing the highest quality education at a low-cost, you will find this job very satisfying. I learned to do video-editing, animations and data science while at this job in under two years.

Cons

The salaries in academia will always be lower than what you can earn in industry.

Pros

Great benefits and competitive salaries (especially for a non-profit). Surrounded by thoughtful, smart people on a daily basis.

Cons

It really depends on the department - it's a large institution and your experience can vary quite a bit depending on which school, and even department within a school, that you work in.
