Pros

Great benefits, great work/life balance, and some really fun and interesting projects. You have freedom to move around the company, work on different things from year to year, and really have an impact on our federal government and the public interest. If you are the kind of person who values variety in your work, serving the public interest, and have a thick skin then you'll love it here.

Cons

Like any big company, there are politics. Since this is government work, there's more politics than most. Pay is also not always competitive with industry, specifically where software engineers are concerned. Each super-organization (called Centers) within the company runs like its own business, which leads to unrest and in-fighting within the company. People are evaluated differently from Center to Center, values are different from Center to Center, and there's lots of turf wars.

Thank you for your feedback. Our mission to work in the public interest is one that inspires many employees. We’re happy to hear that you enjoy MITRE’s benefits as well. Each center is sponsored by a different government organization, which sometimes leads to differences within the operation of that center. While each center may have unique projects, they also continue to seek ways to collaborate, particularly on work that cuts across all our centers.

Great company that can do better

Pros

As many others have said, you cannot beat MITRE’s work-life balance and benefits. Some assignments are better than others but you can manage to move around over time and find a good niche. People are generally respectful and it is a great place to land if you need a break from a hectic for-profit corporate environment. Among the staff, there is a strong sense of altruism and desire to help the government.

Cons

Advancement and promotions can be painfully slow. Inbred management would rather be doing PowerPoint engineering or talking about the engineering stuff they did years ago. You can lose your edge if you hang around too long.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. We agree that our staff’s strong sense of altruism and desire to help the government is part of what makes us successful. We encourage you to speak to your manager or an HR representative to discuss where you might like to take your career and ways to accomplish your development goals.
