Pros

Very smart, modern attitude toward start-ups in the higher education science/publishing field. This, combined with Macmillan's recent company vision reorganization, created an environment with vast potential for the future. The working hours were flexible and there was a good attitude toward working remotely. The benefits were very generous and the cost to the employees was minimal. The corporate office provided for some fun company outings and events throughout the year. Free coffee is always a plus.

Cons

The new vision centered on bringing all companies under the corporate umbrella together to work in the spirit of collaboration in order to bring out their full potential and create a strong force in the market. After their large-scale reorganization in 2013 this vision was (sadly) quickly scaled back. The goal of encouraging projects and programs to have multiple directions was cut down to a "just pick one" mentality. Some of the start-ups were not willing to collaborate and share with others which weakened that branch of the company. Also, having worked in an office with multiple separate small companies, everyone was very compartmentalized and rarely left their own areas. Advancement opportunities were elusive or nonexistent and training/education opportunities were almost exclusive to the New York and London offices. There were no on-site IT staff in the office which meant that all requests had to go to IT staff in New York where they would be quietly ignored.

Pros

As a young woman beginning her career out of college, Macmillan offered a fantastic environment in which to learn and grow. Supportive bosses, upper management, and colleagues. Very collegial atmosphere overall.

Cons

Very low starting salaries, even for publishing. Bonuses for junior employees are low or non-existent.

Pros

A fantastic environment in terms of friendliness. The people at Macmillan are supportive, approachable, offer a great deal of guidance etc. My role offers a great deal of flexibility too. Work/life balance is easily achieved.

Cons

Definitely underpaid for efforts however this is the nature of the field. No clear avenues for career progress. Recently aligned with our international counterparts, we are now being offered training internally.
