Last Downstream Company You Would Want in Houston

-Big company with decent benefits. -Multiple refineries (seven) in various locations in the US so there are opportunities to move if desired. -Pay is direct deposited on time. -Working for Marathon is better than being unemployed.

Cons

Process engineers have been leaving in droves. Probably the singular most important employee type in a refinery and Marathon can't keep theirs and that is not a good sign. Company equates legality with ethicality. Employees that are no longer wanted/needed are marginalized and treated very shabbily with the hope that the worker will move on. MPC has a 1950's mindset (see corporate HQ in Findlay, OH) and expects 60+ hour weeks for significantly less pay than other refiners in Texas. MPC does all the typical self congratulatory stuff regarding safety, ethics etc. but the rank and file see something quite contrary. Management like to "shoot the messenger" although they bang the drum quite vigorously about "doing the right thing" and speaking up etc.

Pros

Big company stability; excellent pay and good benefits. Retirement of pension plus 401k is almost unheard of today, but we have it still. Flexibility is improving (though needs to improve further to attract top talent); finally understanding people today need more in the way of knowing what their future holds (i.e. career discussions, professional development, etc.). Also beginning to recognize we’re a good, ethical, responsible company and need to tell our story better. Finally starting to fully integrate and operate as one company after the Andeavor acquisition. Beginning to recognize great talent existed in both legacy companies and can take us into an even better future if we work together rather than fight to retain the worst aspects of our former selves.

Cons

HR centralization has been a culture-killer. Best thing the CHRO has done had been to push for more flexibility; everything else has been a disaster. She is toxic, clueless as to anything but her own narrative, and rules by fear. She is everything HR should not be.

Pros

Good people to work with and good mid level management, all supervisors I have had have been amazing.

Cons

Corporate and workplace culture has shifted dramatically since the Andeavor merger and change of the CEO. Does not feel like the same company at all, no sense of comradery. Benefits are being reduced even further. Work load increasing as employees leave with no additional pay or replacements in sight. Generally the mood of the workplace is unhappy. All townhall meetings feel like political jargon where they speak for an hour but manage to say nothing of value. No issues are ever addressed beyond "we will look into it." People are leaving at an alarming rate and upper management acts like its all a big surprise.
