Pros

Great health benefits. There are lots of opportunities to learn in the form of seminars, grand rounds, and corporate programs. The employee resources department seems to be supportive of employee concerns.

Cons

This is highly dependent on your department and group, so take my comments with a grain of salt. My experience was not positive. The director of our research group, some of the senior members, and even junior faculty members cultured an environment of dishonesty when it came to publications and idea ownership. Active subjugation of group members was common. There were also instances of junior faculty talking out of both sides of their mouth, undermining credibility of junior group members. All said, if you are considering a position at MGH/Harvard just listen to your intuition after visiting and interviewing. The MGH/Harvard name is big in the field, and I ended up basing my decision on that. I wish I hadn't.

Pros

Get hands-on experience working with patients if you are looking to pursue a career in medicine.

Cons

If you are not looking to be a doctor or nurse, don't waste yourt time here. Dead-end low paying jobs with no opportunity for career advancement because there is no career to be made (unless you are the son, daughter, etc of a doctor, President, CEO, etc). Doctors are your bosses, they are also the Presidents, Board of Directors, CEOs. There is also no standarization accross different departments, which creates a lot of confusion. There is always someone to blame and managers love to place that blame on someone anyone whenever possible instead of fixing the problem.

Pros

In a nutshell, one of the best reasons to work at MGH is the man in charge: Peter Slavin, MD. He really knows how to communicate on every level from the CEO right down to the mailroom. He treats everyone with the highest respect, and so do all of his constituents.

Cons

There are not many downsides. I guess the main one that I would write about would be Human Resources and how the employees cannot increase their salary by more than 2 percent a year. This does not even keep up with inflation. I also think that employees should receive some sort of a discount in the cafe. With the salary offered, $5. a sandwich is justj too much.
