I would not recommend working at this school, however I do suspect that every Mastery campus is run differently with different administrators, teachers, culture teams, resources, etc.
Mastery has unfathomable expectations for their teachers and students. Students come in from the district grade levels behind, yet they are expected to be on grade level and to be taught at grade level (i.e. students can't read, yet are given a 9th grade level text) Money and effort should be going towards these children receiving interventions and individualized instruction, but instead teachers are advised otherwise. The Special Education Team is ignored and disrespected even by administration.
Work load is too intense and teachers are micromanaged way too much. I kid you not- teachers receive "Professional Development" on how to instruct students on getting out a pencil. What a waste of three hours, which could be used to designing appropriate instruction for students in class.
Kids' behavior is horrific and not much is done to change it other than just remove kids from school.
Mastery is disorganized with unclear expectations and communication... but it's the teachers' fault. Everything is the teachers' fault.
If you are a first year teacher looking for your first job, it is probably an OK option for you. You'll soon realize the way a school SHOULD and SHOULDN'T be run. However, if you are wavering on leaving your current teaching job for this one, it probably isn't a good move. Stay where you are at because you won't get much better with Mastery.
