Pros

Competitive pay. Good benefits. The organisation as a whole demonstrates commendable qualities; nevertheless, there exists room for improvement within the leadership structure of the marketing and communications departments. On a positive note, colleagues in these departments, particularly those in pay bands below leadership levels, consistently exhibit exceptional kindness and unwavering support. Management started to hire from within. Therefore, career development opportunities are available.

Cons

The Director of Marketing and Communications consistently articulates positive intentions, yet there is a notable disparity between discourse and action. Frequent lapses in follow-up on suggested activities or ideas are observed. Despite the remote nature of the role, flexibility is conspicuously absent, with a strict adherence to a 9-5 schedule and an expectation of instantaneous availability. The team culture is unfortunately characterised by an absence of cohesion, primarily driven by an atmosphere of fear. Creativity, while superficially encouraged, is stifled by an overarching expectation to conform. Although boldness is advocated, a cumbersome 10-step sign-off process and a two-week approval cycle undermine this directive. The term "collaboration" is professed, but the shift towards an emphasis on efficiency has dissuaded proactive efforts to arrange collaborative calls. A mere annual meeting is considered sufficient for cultivating a semblance of a collaborative culture. Middle management lacks the necessary skills for effective people management, with instances of borderline bullying behaviour observed alongside micro management for certain managers. Due to a pervasive lack of trust and absenteeism of senior management in supporting junior staff, there exists a reluctance to report such issues. Recognition for achievements is notably absent, with an overemphasis on pointing out imperfections. Continuous development opportunities in design, marketing, and communications teams are lacking, and promised initiatives frequently remain undelivered. The absence of new starter training leaves individuals to navigate responsibilities without proper onboarding, underscoring a need for structured induction processes.

Thank you for getting in touch, we appreciate your feedback. We're concerned to read about your experience. We are constantly striving to create an inclusive, supportive and professional working environment where all colleagues can thrive. Whether that's through dedicated learning and development, flexible working, regular 1-2-1s, collaboration between teams or introducing new ways of doing things. In recent months, we’ve introduced a recognition platform and awards scheme to ensure colleagues feel recognised and valued in their roles. We take the working conditions and wellbeing of our colleagues very seriously, and have robust policies and processes in place to create a culture where everyone is treated fairly and can raise concerns without fear of retribution. It's why we seek colleague feedback through our annual engagement survey, colleague-led networks, colleague forums and monthly colleague calls so that we can make real and meaningful changes to the way we work. We’d like to hear more about your time at Maximus so that we can look into the issues you’ve raised and continue to make changes for the better. If you would like to share more with us, please email feedback@maximusuk.co.uk and we'll be in touch.
