Pros

Good benefits for medical, dental, life insurance, etc

Cons

Lots of politics. And I do mean lots of politics. Need to survive at least 8 years to maybe not suffer from politics

Pros

Strong corporate culture, good perks like free passes to local events and museums, nice offices, on site cafeteria that can be hit or miss, and if you are a proven worker hours have some flexibility.

Cons

Company hierarchy is extremely topheavy. The upper levels of management don't seem to do much of anything so overhead is very high and compensation low relative to local competitors. Pressure to meet annual performance targets fall heavily on the boots on the ground even though the obvious culprit is the bloated and ineffective management. Internal company divisions leads to lots of infighting and general tension. Low salaries leads to rapid turnover, among engineers and technical staff the problem seems especially acute. Advancement within the company is very difficult. Most management positions are filled with external hires and not through promotions. Unfortunately the position you're hired in is likely the one you're going to be stuck with. If you want a raise or a promotion your beat bet is to find a new employer.

Pros

In my role in Finance, I wasn't directly involved in many of the issues that project managers had to face in order to successfully bring jobs to completion. So, my views on the relative success or failure on the core efforts of the company were limited. McKinstry was in the process of upgrading their ERP to enable clearer transaction and project based reporting and accounting workflows, which is an arduous process especially for a widely dispersed company with many locations nationally. The Finance leadership is excellent and has a great vision. In all of the efforts surrounding the ERP upgrade, management strove to partner with all stakeholders in order to make the company thrive. Also, the onsite gym and cafeteria are fantastic as is the company culture. The culture does a lot to absolve any flaws McKinstry has. They have fun company and team events, company parties,, and they do an amazing job of making everyone feel like family.

Cons

There is a lot of internal inertia related to very seasoned staff who don't want to be open or flexible to change, even when it is staring them in the face. A lot of effort was expended to introduce the new ERP in a way that placated individuals who were entrenched in the older system.
