Pros

The pay and benefits are fantastic, but they create a dependency making it nearly impossible to leave. They hire all Ivey Leaguers so it is very nice to work with smart, talented people day in and day out, but that does breed competition.

Cons

Managements decisions are not only unclear, they are not disseminated to employees so your jobs expectations are not defined. As an employee, you go to work in fear that you MAY not be working to your managers unclear expectations. It is, by far, the worst feeling to live with that I have ever experienced. I would dread going in to work starting Sunday night and would relish Friday afternoons.

Pros

Great salary and benefits Decent work hours for management Provide great customer service Provide some tuition reimbursement Great salary and benefits for non-management positions as well Staff tended to be very friendly and polite--often more helpful than upper management Nice facility and warehouse Nice cafeteria

Cons

McMaster-Carr doesn't promote full time staff to management positions; rather, they seek recent college graduates from particular institutions. As one of those graduates, I found that they promoted "innovative" ideas but weren't actually open to these ideas. There was a lot of tension between management and staff--staff could never be promoted and were often far more competent than their supervisors. I found the atmosphere to be very negative, and the people to be untrustworthy (i.e., one manager was known from "back-stabbing") which made it difficult to ask questions. The company was trying to promote more female leadership, but there was no trust or unity amongst the female trainees as they were vying for promotions. Overall, I didn't feel it was a place where I could learn how to be a good leader and how to manage people--and the negative atmosphere led me to leave. As a trainee, you have to participate in inventory at least 1 time a month until you're promoted

Pros

The benefits, compensation, 100 % tuition reimbursement. The pay is unparallel to anything you will find in the market and they bring alot of talented people into the company on this premise. I had to ability to start my graduate work, pay off schools loans because of the pay and the year end bonus. Also, you never have to think about doing work outside of work. They have a good work/life balance.

Cons

No career advancement. The organization is flat, with only two levels, generalists and managers. Don't be fooled by the managers, they are kids straight out of ivy leagues, who may have had awesome grades, but come from non-business backgrounds. Anotherwords, they have no idea what they are doing, yet they are taken alot more seriously than anyone else, who may have had management experience. They get placed to manage people and criticize their work, when they actually haven't spent time in the positions themselves to understand their work. The company lies when recruiting to get people into the door, you may be placed in dept you hate only to be told you can't be moved because they have a plan for you. They don't, they move people around or keep people in the same positions for long periods of time, just because. You have no say or flexibility where you want to go within the company. Also, there are no promotions ever to upper management. The atmosphere is extremely negative, they never have good feedback for you. You always feel like you are walking on eggshells, never knowing if you may be let go next. They fire people with years of experience within the company for no reason at all.
