Pros

WFH, free hosting, lots of high-level technical training

Cons

If you're employed here, you'll be overworked & underpaid, despite parent company GoDaddy being a mega-giant with zillions of dollars. IT consultants charge triple digits to do some of the things you're expected to do at $17/hr. You have zero control over your workflow & schedule. You will be put on a very unpleasant shift. You will be reprimanded for meeting quota, because the expectation is that you actually take as many calls as possible. Don't believe anything they tell you in the interview about call volume. It was not abnormal for me to take 40 calls a day; a couple of times, I took 30 calls before lunch. It's ridiculous, considering how technical some of those calls are. You can't catch your breath, because your manager will ride you for being out of the phone queue, even if your queue time is way above your quota. Because, again, the quotas don't really matter. Every call is recorded, and if you deviate even slightly from the correct procedure (i.e. being OK with a customer calling himself "Bob" instead of "Robert" as it says on the screen), for any reason, prepare for an entire 1-on-1 about it if the call gets QA'd. Note that during your early shadowing period, you'll watch reps deviate constantly from procedure & be told that it's better to deviate than make someone upset. This is completely contradicted by management once you're actually taking calls, which is one of a few ways you're set up for stress during the onboarding process. Overall, you're treated like a cog & paid like a dog. The office is neat, but you won't work there. You will never meet most of your coworkers; I never even met my manager.

Thank you for the feedback. We are definitely proud to call WFH (Work From Home) and the ability to gain some deep technical knowledge among some of our perks. While you are allowed to work at the Los Angeles office, we are indeed a fully remote team, spread across various parts of the country. A fully remote team comes with its own set of employee perks and drawbacks. An obvious perk is definitely as simple as being able to work from the comfort of your own home, while a drawback can be, as you mentioned, not seeing/meeting in person some of your co-workers. We used to do team outings and are experimenting with department outings this year. We may not have perfected the engagement model for a fully remote team, but we strive to continually make it better. Another area of pride is setting the proper expectations for our customers and employees. Members of management make up the interviewers and should be providing realistic job expectations before hire. It is also important that certain processes are not deviated from for various reasons, including security and customer experience. That being said, we also pride ourselves on giving you the ability to think outside the box. While some processes are and should remain set in stone, there are plenty where we expect you to be creative, put yourself in the customer’s shoes, and challenge the status quo. We want to empower you to be a free thinker and shoot for treating the customer the way you would want to be treated.

Sadly Not The Company It Use To Be

Pros

Good life/work balance, flexible PTO, good health benefits, office culture, happy hours/internal events and the employees are stellar group of talented people, they are the best part of Media Temple

Cons

I had been with the company for years back when it was an startup. It use to be a great place to work that encouraged growth from within, rewarded and valued it's hardworking talented employees, a very family like atmosphere. Sadly it is not the company it use to be. It was purchased a few years ago by GoDaddy and in the past two years as GoDaddy began to merge and take greater hold of Media Temple all of the above declined. People are overworked, taking on multiple jobs under appreciated & underpaid causing them to feel burnt out and which saw lots of employees leave for our competition where their salaries doubled for the same work. Pay raises use to be a good standard, but those also declined, despite employees meeting or exceeding goals. In the last year we saw an increase in micro managing and less internal advancement. And if loyal employees didn't leave then they were let go recently in mass layoffs. Even clients favorable reviews about MT declined due a decrease in the outstanding service and products we use to provide. I loved what this company was and the people, it truly was a great place to work, but it's become a shell of that due to flawed leadership, product over quality, glossing over management issues and the disillusionment of the employees causing lots of turnover.

Thanks for your time in writing this review. It’s good to know that you enjoyed the culture, values, work/life balance and people that create such a positive working environment. There are definitely things that we could do better and we have some exciting goals for 2018 to accomplish. The fact is, Media Temple isn’t what it was years ago. It has been in a constant state of change since it was founded. Even more so, Media Temple is remaining a separate brand but is a company of GoDaddy and has been since 2013 and we expect more changes in the future. We aim for the best days to be ahead of us.

Pros

Media Temple used to be a great place to work. Bagel Mondays (catered breakfast every Monday), bring your dog to work, lots of happy hour events and general events that promoted a collaborative company culture and provided unique bonding experiences. Most of these perks have disappeared or lessened within the past year. 401K (and matching) and Health plans are about the only perks left. If you are going into marketing or creative, you will get fair compensation. Other departments, not so much.

Cons

Where do I begin? The biggest thing that is quite noticeable is the blatant discrimination within the company. If you are a female or someone of an ethnic background (i.e. not white) you're at a major disadvantage in this company. Also, compensation fairness varies from department to department. Marketing and Creative seem to be paid fairly, but the hard working devs and engineers are making way less than what they are worth at competitors or any other start up in the LA area. Secondly, there is no trust within anyone in the building. Don't say anything you wouldn't want someone else to hear. Things travel fast within the company. Now, if you decide to try and speak out against any of it, management will take it personally and do whatever it takes to have you dismissed. I have watched countless employees "let go" or "forced to resign" because they decided to go to GoDaddy HR regarding Media Temple issues. And if you try to go to GoDaddy HR regarding Media Temple HR, they will just direct you to reach out to your own department. This allows higher level Media Temple employees to be protected, and not be held accountable for their own actions. The company is trying to grow too quickly, and it's hurting everyone. There has been a distinct pattern of either hiring people into roles they are not qualified for, or GoDaddy assigning their own employees to Media Temple positions - causing a large conflict of interest internally. HR also has a skewed perspective on anyone from Customer Support who wants to move to another department. Several hiring managers have said that "CS employees are worthless and have no potential" and will bar them from moving out of their positions. This obviously is causing a high turn over rate as employees are frustrated they don't have a future with the company. The biggest gripe about Media Temple is the new office location. Most of the employees are based in cheaper areas of LA (Downtown LA, Burbank, Koreatown, West Hollywood, etc.). Leadership and the President have tried time and time to convince everyone that the office move was done in their best interest, and how big of a "tech hub" the location is. Well, it's not. The location only benefits the President of the company. In fact, for most employees it has increased commute time by 40-60+ minutes.
