Once Great, Now Volatile

Pros

Culture is strong at MediaMath and teams and the people who comprise those teams are dedicated and loyal. Perks are amazing - unlimited PTO (in the States), free snacks, beautiful offices...on the surface a dream place to work.

Cons

Upper management has lost touch with what made this company great in the first place. Ego and ambition lead the company to make many poor decisions which have lead to low revenue generation, difficulty hiring and maintaining top notch talent, and organizational changes that break high functioning teams apart. Turnover is high, loyalty is low, and the company is moving to a more corporate environment and ideology. This type of growth is fine and expected for a company that is 10+ years old but the humanity and respect for the people who have literally and figuratively built the company has waned in the last few years. It's about making money and less about creating a steady work environment for people who are dedicated to the product and the vision. The top-down decisions have seemingly been made without consideration for those who do the actual day to day work which was a core part of what made working at MediaMath so great in its early days.

Thank you for yourfeedback. We appreciate you taking the time to tell us about your experience with us as we use it as an opportunity to improve. On one hand, we’re happy you enjoyed our culture during your time here and had the chance to work with a team of dedicated employees. We think our team is pretty awesome too! At the same time, we’d like to respond to your concerns: In 2019, we welcomed pivotal new leaders to MediaMath, including our president and most recently our Chief Financial Officer. We’ve been very focused on increasing our transparency with employees through weekly All hands and emails to ensure that employees feel engaged, informed, and most fundamentally, valued and respected. We’ve also prioritized around fewer initiatives, enabling employees to have a greater understanding of our vision and goals, how we’re performing against those goals, and creating a work environment that feels steady, even amidst an industry that’s undergoing major transformation, that we’re playing an important role in driving. Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback and we wish you well in all of your future endeavors.

Not for everyone

Pros

There is flexibility. They understand that you're human, which is nice. The snacks are good. People are generally nice.

Cons

Overall it's just very disorganized. Although people are nice, they're not honest in the feedback they give to employees. No one can grow if you only tell people they're doing fine. Too many VP's, and too many of those VP's are not actually qualified for the role. Everyone talks about doing stuff, but no one (in management) is actually putting in the work to get it done (except maybe 2 people). There is no actual sense of urgency, it only feels that way because everything is so last minute. Every other month they're bringing in a new consultancy or expert to help fix problems, or grow, or whatever it is that they were trying to do that week, but nothing ever changed. It truly felt like throwing money at a problem, but never fixing it. It felt like management was never on the same page, lots of big egos.

We’re surprised by this feedback. Our HRBP team has an average of 6-years’ experience and our turnover is at a healthy level compared to the industry. Our culture is highly entrepreneurial and people who display our values do very well here; but we understand that the pace is not for everyone. Best of luck in your new role!
