Pros

I worked at MSKCC for 5 years as an Administrative Assistant. Some of the people who I worked with were nice but not everyone. Nice location and area to go out for lunch and shopping. Leaving Sloan was a blessing - got a higher paying job elsewhere and then completed my master's degree and started a new career after that.

Cons

While I worked there, I finished my BA and went on dozens of interviews for higher positions, none of which I was ever accepted for, albeit qualified. Supervisors consistently asked for personal favors throughout my 5 year employment, i.e. getting their daily lunch, snacks, coffee, responding to personal calls, etc. Although I did everything that was expected and more, and had almost perfect attendance my first few years, it wasn't enough.

Pros

Decent co-workers as they understand the workload and unrealistic expectations

Cons

Underpaid, Overworked, dysfunctional management, No work-life balance. This used to be a classy, established hospital, but now not so much. Beware!

Pros

Benefits and good pay are about the only pros

Cons

Unfair work environment where favoritism is obvious. You may have a heavy work assignment while another person in the same position has a lighter, if overworked they ask you to be flexible instead of providing solutions. Often you will work over your hours without breaks. Impossible job to maintain a work life balance especially if you’re a new mother because you may stay in clinic until 7-8pm some nights. Vacation requests often get declined due to short staffing. Very difficult to climb the clinical ladder and hardly room for growth. They will try and sell you by saying everyone’s fun and young and supportive. Most nurses have only been there a few years because everyone ends up leaving due to the environment. It’s a very draining, demanding and thankless job. Do not do it.
