Pros

The overall goal of the organization, transportation to/from buildings and the benefits

Cons

I did see that HR deletes the negative reviews. I am writing this review to hopefully give potential candidates some insight on my experience. If you've never worked for a non-profit or hospital before, please ask a lot of questions, meet your team and get everything in writing before you accept an offer from MSK. The culture isn't at all what was presented at orientation. Management is not adaptable to change, expectations of your role/responsibilities are not defined. There is lack of communication, people are protective almost resulting in a competitive work environment. If you ask questions, they're not welcome, which inhibits your ability to learn the current processes. Any issues which are escalated are questioned and MSK policies are not applicable to all employees. As an outsider, I have never encountered such practices, culture and negativity. Favoritism exists and employees are granted benefits based on seniority and your personal relationship with leadership. The culture is to sit at your desk from 9-5pm, little collaboration and no one smiles, says hello or makes you feel welcome. Not sure if it's the nature of the work but having worked at similar organizations, the end goal should be productivity and providing new employees with the resources to succeed. I am starting to believe it may vary by department but if you're considering clinical research, you have been warned. Their definition of flexibility is very different than the industry or other organizations. Be ready to encounter a hazing period when you first start. Exempt employees are treated as hourly employees. You're not given autonomy or the decision making ability for your own team. Most of the employees have only worked at MSK and probably wouldn't survive elsewhere considering the professionalism required and expected at other organizations. I didn't get a good feeling my first day and each week it became even harder to see a future with the organization. If you're considering joining, make sure you understand the role, the people you'll work with and the resources you'll be given to do your job.

Great place to work but there is room for improvement

Pros

excellent benefits/ VAC/ sick time/ maternity + paternity leave. This is usually where MSK hooks it's employees - for an entry level position you get 21 VAC days which is absurdly awesome. There is a lot of opportunities to get involved, attend presentations, gain additional skills through various trainings (L&OD). For the most part the employees are nice and driven by working for an institution with a great mission. Tuition reimbursement caps at 12500/yr - you will not find that anywhere else. Pay is fairly competitive. Great work life balance but this is sometimes dependent on what dept you work in (some dept's are known for having horrible work-life balance)

Cons

- Upper management (not your supervisor) decides what people get on their performance appraisals even though they never work directly with you - Nepotism runs DEEP. If someone in upper management doesn't 'like you' expect to get looked over for potential promotions for people who are considered 'safe and conventional' (ex: someone who is early, stays quite in meetings, and doesn't challenge the administration even though they might do a subpar job) - Unrealistic expectations: we are rated on a scale of 1-5 but MSK likes for people to believe that being a 3 ( which ranges from 3.0-3.74 and is considered 'Successful') is something to be proud of because "MSK has much higher standards and being successful here means you exceed expectations everywhere else". - There is a moral issue in most dept's because people don't feel like their hard work and dedication is not valued. No one is asking for an award but when you put in 100hrs in 2 weeks because your dept is severely understaffed you should be appreciated and not receive and email from your supervisor asking you why you did so much OT when they know exactly why - Everything happens at a very slow pace; from transferring, to being hired, promotions, etc... these could take literal months before anything happens

Pros

The name "Memorial Sloan Kettering" is seen as prestigious.

Cons

Although MSK's website and PR screams that MSK is a loving environment where all employees are accepted, and taken care of, MSK is actually a toxic environment. Very few employees are educated about mental health, what is best for their own work/life balance (everyone does not want to work all day, and then "hang out" with their co-workers), and how to manage people in a healthy manner. Expect backstabbing and bullying. I mean bullying by supervisors (remember, there is no law against bullying, and MSK HR tends to side with the supervisor if anything negative comes up. If you do reach out , HR will most likely ask you to "make a plan as to why you are a better business decision than [the bully]"). Personally I conducted had over 200 in depth interviews with MSK patients (as a part of my role). The majority (65-70%) of patients interviewed reported feeling "lack of emotional care," "I'm a piece of meat on a somewhat competent conveyor belt," "I hate my doctor," etc. Personally my supervisor was immature and consistently inappropriate (e.g. telling supervisees too much about her personal life [extreme boundary issues, and rage issues], speaking harshly about other supervisees during one-on-one check-ins, drinking excessively at "happy hour" events arranged by the team). In general my supervisor was a great example of what NOT to do. This is part of the culture, please take caution, many supervisors behave poorly.
