Pros

Career advancement is not a pipe dream. Hard work will get you wherever you want to go. You don't necessarily need a college degree for advancement. If you can show your skill and leadership abilities, you can go wherever you want. The best reason to work for Menards is we don't hire just anyone and we expect people to learn something while they are working there. We know our stuff leaps and bounds ahead of our competition and it shows.

Cons

It's retail. The hours suck, the customers are worse but occasionally someone really benefits from your help and they express their appreciation and it makes the job worth it. The lack of up to date computer systems, logistics systems and the like all affect job satisfaction. Menards has barely come out of the DOS era and it shows. Progress is being made but it is slow (becuase it's costly). As with any job, there are politics, if you can't play, you can't get ahead.

Good pay, but long hours

Pros

Lots of opportunity to work in most fields for above average pay (marketing, merchandising, accounting, advertising, operations, CAD, store design, IT, etc) if you are willing to live in Eau Claire, and if you want to manage your own store you can work into that within 5 years with a college degree. Manager Trainee program available for college grads, and if you can pass the tests you can be in management in 3 months. You can make management with a high school degree if willing to work for it. Pay is well above average for most positions, from corporate level to store level. Benfits include health, dental, 401k. Profit sharing is great after a few years (it goes up to 15% of your gross after 7 years). Management bonuses. Team atmosphere. Lots of variety in every position. Growing company, even in today's economy.

Cons

Long hours- in stores you get every other weekend off, but your weekends on are 12+ hour days Saturday and Sunday. General Office employees typically work 50+ hours a week. Pay is hourly in all positions.

Pros

Menards is a great place to work in two cases, part time in college or right out of college. I fall into the latter category. I've gotten more experience right out of school than most of my peers will see for 2 to 3 years in their entry level position.

Cons

The compensation and benefits package offers no stability. For example, in the Chicagoland area full time employees max out at the top of the payscale at 12.80 per hour. Most people make their money off of profit sharing, which isn't guaranteed, and doesn't pay off until 5 to 8 years into their careers. In addition, full timers are NOT permitted to continue their education under any circumstances, and the environment is openly hostile between management and labor
