Beware of the "old boys club"

Pros

Good starting company, but don't expect to advance unless you are part of their internal cliques, it's not about what you do but who you know

Cons

Don't expect to advance unless you play their games, hard work doesn't count here. They are constantly looking for the next easy way to improve customer service, instead of doing the right thing. You can't motivate people to help customers by paying someone who wrote a book to train them. If you treat your employees right, pay them fairly and recognize good work then the customer service will follow. You can get away with anything if you know the right people, and they like you.

Pros

Mercury cares about their employees and encourages the employees to take time for themselves. Mercury is a employee oriented company who wants the employees to be happy. Other companies are not employee oriented. Mercury also gives one week of additional pay in December as a Christmas gift for the employees. They are also good about giving raises each year even though they start you out at a lower rate of pay. Great job Mercury!

Cons

The owner and creator of Mercury is a very conservative person who wanted to leave well enough alone when it came to insurance. Now that he has finally stepped down and there is a new CEO running the company he is trying to push Mercury to align with the larger Insurance Companies. Currently Mercury is limited to single line Insurance. Personal and Commerical Auto, Homeowners, Mechanical Breakdown Insurance only. For those who have experience with Multi-line business will not be able to use those abilities. This company has been behind the times and is trying to launch into the 21st century as quickly as they can. It will take years before that happens though. Thus, the current pay is low and is not as competitive as other Insurance Companies.

Pros

The ability to have a better understanding of the law and how it affects the general public. Since the laws of insurance is constantly changing, you are recommended to be fluid in this industry.

Cons

There are no many positions that are available. It is also difficult to switch from one field of expertise to another field even if we are dealing in the same industry (ie. move from claims adjuster to an underwriter is difficult at best).
