I can't speak for how other NGOs handled the last six months after the administration's decision to cancel key USAID programs, but my experience with Mercy Corps was deeply disappointing. It felt like leadership didn’t think twice about the fact that we are people—with responsibilities, families, and lives outside of work. We were informed on a Tuesday that our positions would be terminated, and our last day was that same Friday. That’s three days to wrap up months (or years) of work, hand off responsibilities, and say goodbye—not to mention the loss of health insurance with no transition plan or meaningful support. It felt less like a thoughtful offboarding and more like a rush to get people off payroll as quickly as possible. This kind of short-sighted, impersonal layoff process sends a clear message about where priorities lie. For an organization that talks a lot about compassion and resilience, the way this was handled left many of us feeling discarded, not valued. Mercy Corps can and should do better when it comes to treating its people with dignity during moments of crisis.
