Some pros, but many underlying internal practices that frustrate

Pros

There's a lot of effort made to create a fun/open workspace, and it shows. The facility is nice and there are plenty of in and out of office events to look forward to. There are many talented and diverse workers at HQ, and there are opportunities within MetroStar to change roles or try new things. There were periods where workloads were balanced, and morale was good.

Cons

Salary was well under industry average for my position and did not increase. I got the sense that compensation varied wildly across the organization. Management tended to be inconsistent and often lacked empathy for employees, resulting in certain high-demand teams and employees being burnt out through overwork - resulting in morale problems and turn over. Many of the company's current successes are the product of employees that burnt themselves out and left the organization over the last few years. There were repeated cycles where certain management and leadership roles did not want to engage on projects or assignments that needed their input, but would still get angry at employees when the final product wasn't up to par. Some employees could get away with denying assistance or information to other teams simply because they didn't want to be bothered, and at least one of them is now at the Director level. Company culture can be difficult to navigate due to the number of college friends or relatives working on the executive side of the office. There has also been a surfeit of promotions to Director/VP levels, resulting in a very top heavy organization. And finally, the motivating factor for posting this review, is the internal campaign for positive reviews on Glassdoor. There's a reason for the flood of ONLY 5-star reviews over the last 6 mo., and it's not because of a radical shift in business practices or priorities.

Dysfunctional small business

Pros

Beautiful campus in Reston with nice and fun open areas. Rapid growth which provides opportunities.

Cons

The company doesn't have an appropriate management structure. This creates high levels of dysfunction. The CEO is CEO of two companies. There is a vacuum in leadership that permeates the organization. Multiple senior management positions are filled with family members, roommates, fraternity brothers, creating a frat-boy culture. High turnover rate due to senior management lack of preparation. Employees are either utterly overworked or fly under the radar doing nothing but chatting all day in open areas. The company is doing itself a disservice by engaging in active campaigns for submission of positive reviews.

Thank you for acknowledging our rapid growth, which results in career opportunities. The fact that we can continue to offer career development for our valued workforce is a critical component of our growth strategy. We are committed to creating an admired company – both internally and externally. However, we acknowledge that this is a work in progress, and there are still many lessons to be learned and changes to be made. To that end, I encourage you to have a conversation with a trusted leader or HR team member, to enable us to make improvements together. If you aren’t interested in being a part of those improvements, I encourage you to consider a transition to an employer where you can find happiness and a shared commitment to improvement. It’s imperative that we continue to nurture and protect the aspects of our culture that are central to our DNA such as open communication, solutions-orientation, and positivity. Reviews such as the ones we receive here on Glassdoor, as well as the feedback we collect through employee surveys and other information channels, are an important part of understanding how we can continuously improve. I stand firm that while we will continue to collect feedback, we have not and will not, attempt to bias that feedback.

Pros

It can be fun when the pressure is light from doing 3 people jobs in 1.

Cons

Management. Salaries are way under. Benefits are low and don't compete with others. Very immature.
