Pros

As a government contractor for the NNSS, there is little reason to fear economic downturn. There is some schedule flexibility and decent PTO policy starting a 3 weeks annually. Lastly, they offer a pension for those employed 5 years and over.

Cons

Some departments lack resources and are overwhelmed with differing priorities and are in need of additional personnel, while other departments receive much more funding and attention. These groups are afforded extras including travel and training opportunities. Another con is there is a two year minimum time required to spend in a position so if you are not happy with what you are doing you might be tempted to quit rather than wait for a chance to move elsewhere.

Totally Feckless Leadership

Pros

4-10 work schedule (every Friday off). comparable pay to other construction jobs on 4-10s

Cons

MSTS leadership is totally feckless. No process and procedures in place. The management company MSTS holds themselves separate from the "leftover" managment team. The "leftovers" are the remaining managment team that stays in pllace through all the different "management" contractors who "run" the NNSS for the DOE. "leftovers" can not receive higher than a 3/5 on the annual reviews. The leftover management teams are institutionalized to test site thinking and are lazy. Design engineering is the worst I have ever seen.

Disengaged Leadership Team

Pros

The science and the people who actually do the work

Cons

The top leadership team is more interested in where they can travel and how much work they can shove down to everyone else. They truly do not care about their employees and it shows in ever increasing numbers of people who are leaving and their inability to hire anyone good. They just keep blaming the good economy but I have friends who work for technical companies and they aren't having this problem. So the rest of us kill ourselves getting the work done or they tell us our replacements will.
