Pros

Tremendous growth and opportunity for people who want to build opportunities and not just take a job; upper management aggressively fosters entrepreneurial spirit partly driven by need to continually generate interest and purchase of shares of the Company (some see this as a negative inherent to publicly-traded companies but it is a real necessity and can be a tremendously positive experience for many) and partly through senior management’s own vision and philosophical culture overall. Big project wins and market diversifications are exciting. Company is also actively pursuing improved internal synergies and opportunities with more focus on intra-company communication and engagement. If you think out of the box, have great business acumen, and can help the Company be successful, you will enjoy the budding culture! If you are more technically driven and have a passion for high quality, cost effective work then you also enjoy the emerging culture with focus on providing improved, higher-quality services to clients as well.

Cons

Per above, you can’t escape the real-world demands of continually meeting and exceeding financial performance expectations of shareholders while also meeting or exceeding the expectations of client’s for high quality technical and cost/schedule performance. And in the mix, there is the need of meeting and exceeding staff expectations as employees or shareholders themselves. Some local/regional managers are not yet fully assimilated in a common [business] culture and vision having come from past acquisitions and mergers, so this may contribute to some of the disparities and concerns as mentioned in other reviews, but the Company is now actively addressing such issues for the better.

Pros

Multi-discipline engineering firm offered lots of interaction between disciplines. Learned much of other disciplines outside my own, which allows me to be a more well-rounded engineer.

Cons

Medical benefits were decent, but no Christmas bonus, very little recognition for work done. Once company went public, it seemed that all decisions were to pacify shareholders and not to incentivize the engineers who were actually doing the work to make money for the firm. It was after the IPO that the medical benefits dropped off as well as the bonuses & incentives.

Pros

Lots of interesting projects. Good and well rounded staff with varied experience. Responsive IT department. The stock is rising fast!

Cons

Understaffed given the workload with deadlines difficult to meet without long hours. Poor planning and staff project management. No work/home balance. Quick to fire people for slight issues (didn't finish quickly or over budget? going through a divorce? Parent died? Trouble mastering a concept? Wanting to go part time? All grounds for being fired) Very slow to hire new employees, especially with the regional manager or CEO approval being required for the lowest staff. Management regularly throws its employees under the bus. Management creates an atmosphere that pits employees against each other, while the employees (who see this happening) try their best not to go postal. Managements belief is that you should be happy you have a job at NV5, because, as they have said, who else will hire you. Management of all levels tries to micromanage, even ruining budgets by doing the drafting themselves (because they believe they can do it better than anyone else). On insurance benefits, if you work less than 32 hours a week average, you get NO (I repeat...NO) benefits. Most other engineering firms nationwide provide partial insurance benefits for part time employees. HR: Just another department understaffed. They want to do right by the employee, but they are hampered by management. If you do get hired, make sure everything agreed upon in the interview is in the offer letter, promises made in an email won't be granted and will likely be met with an offer to be let go. My recommendation: Run, this is not a happy company to work for. If you must work here, have an exit strategy planned before your first day.
