Pros

This Used to be a Really Well Run Non-Profit Organization

Cons

I worked for NMSI for close to 8 years; I traveled giving lectures, trainings and seminars to students and teachers. After a Covid related restructuring they hired me as a Coach. After a year of working as a Coach, via lame pathetic email, I, along with many other others, were laid off. They stated the reason for the lay offs were a lack of demand, lose of contracts with major DOE's in NYC and others. Yet, one month later, on the NMSI website there was a job posting for Coaches; very shady non-profit, high employee turnover and no loyalty to long time employees-stay away.

Pros

•Collaborating with team members •Support from manager and training (in preparation for an assignment) •Paid for preparation time as well as presentation time

Cons

•Due to nature of PD delivery right now, the work for a part-time coach is sporadic. •Many part-time coaches were/are brought on-board even with the above-mentioned limitations of opportunities for work. •Sometimes, the response time from upper management is lacking or slow, seemingly offered when there are fires to put out more so than as a means of fostering and maintaining open communication amongst all employees. Advice: take the time to touch base with and check in on all who report to you - by survey, monthly coach meetings, open office hours (not just for those who are working on a specific project).

Mismanagement of resources

Pros

The pay is above market value Many of the people working there are great The kitchen is fully stocked and open to anyone The new CEO will hopefully change things for the better The mission is great. Almost too great to be led by some of the people working there

Cons

Senior level managers are past due for a change. Many are unprofessional and unpredictable lacking management skills better than first-time shift leaders at fast food restaurants. Work place bullying is normal, mass firings are regular, and the culture created by that instability does harm to a lot of genuinely great people at the organization. The amount of money wasted (hiring people for one role, compensating them astronomically, then giving them secretarial work or mismanaging them to the point where they don’t get the opportunity to think for themselves) should be considered a fireable offense and if left unchecked, will be their downfall. I feel the most sorry for the non-senior level employees. They deserve so much better than they get.
