      Career Cut Short at Nationwide

      Pros

      Relatively stable employment. You have to be a real slug to get fired there. Reasonable salary and benefits for the Insurance and Financial Services Industry. Good HR processes for annual reviews and raises. A good place to work if you are an insurance person, not so great for IT pros.

      Cons

      Once you report to the Director and VP levels, the politics are over the top. Management in the IT space turned over way to quickly and chaotically to have any good long term planning. Slot machine management. Too many managers with insufficient technical knowledge making decisions they are not qualified to make. My management basicly ignored the advice of their subject matter experts and managed by CYA. Management doesn't like it when people tell them the facts of the situation they are in and it requires significant company wide effort over many years to resolve.

      They are a Mutual Company.

      Cons

      Some very slick back stabbers get away at pitching morals & stories their way to throw you to the curb if you lose your internal support network. Be on your guard all the time.

      Pros

      -Depending on department or position, work schedule can be extremely flexible with opportunities to work from home. -Decent HQ facilities (i.e. gym, massage therapy, yoga classes, etc.)

      Cons

      -Difficult to move to another position within the company unless you know someone or you get referred by your manager. Simply applying to position on your own will get you nowhere. -Management does not always support growth or opportunity. Have encountered a few toxic bosses in middle management who are incompetent and conniving. They feel threatened by employees "with potential" so they do anything in their power to keep these employees from one day becoming their boss (i.e. nitpicking on performance evaluations, openly ridiculing or blaming certain employees for non-issues, etc.) -Pay is not good and raises are non-existent. So-called performance evaluations are predetermined to keep you where you're at. -Depending on department or function, co-workers and managers are not good people, not highly educated, do not have standards or high morals.
