Pros

Staff care about the mission and the patients.

Cons

Staff is overworked and underpaid. Leadership is always telling us how bad our financial situation is. They did a round of layoffs over the summer. The interim CEO Jamie Hazard has no idea on how to run the company. Their solution is to keep cutting staff and expenses. The leadership change has caused a lot of angst and morale is low. I hope they take the employee survey seriously.

Regressive leadership

Business Outlook

Pros

The organization offers a competitive benefits package and convenient employee parking. Clinicians are gaining access to new AI tools—such as ambient listening and clinical decision support—that help reduce administrative burden and enhance patient care. The organization also benefits from a strong population health leader who is advocating for rigor, excellence, and quality reporting, as well as a committed Chief Equity Officer who is building strong, collaborative partnerships with community stakeholders to advance and rebuild equity and trust, in spite of the challenges listed below.

Cons

The organization is experiencing a period of regressive leadership that has eroded prior gains in innovation, equity, and excellence. Rather than advancing modern models of care, leadership has reverted to outdated approaches that fail to meet the realities of today’s healthcare environment. This retrenchment has fostered a culture of complacency, where “good enough” is tolerated, excellence is no longer pursued, and rigor is absent from both strategic and operational decision-making. As anti-racism initiatives have been systematically dismantled, the organization has marginalized historically excluded individuals and communities, weakening its commitment to equity and inclusion. These actions have not only reversed progress but also created an atmosphere of quiet retaliation, where staff and partners who advocate for equity feel silenced or sidelined. The combination of regressive models of care, a culture of coasting, and the marginalization of voices calling for change threatens both the moral integrity and the long-term sustainability of the organization. At a time when healthcare organizations must lead with innovation, accountability, and equity, this trajectory risks undermining community trust and organizational resilience.
