Pros

I worked at NetApp for over 5 years. It was a wonderful experience. The company was growing at a rate above 30% YOY when I joined. I was given lots of autonomy, challenges and variety. The leadership team was amazing and inspiring; I had a lot of faith in the leadership. It was a very family oriented environment; working at NetApp became a way of life. My family was brought into the fold via events that happened throughout the year. My children really missed NetApp.

Cons

In the last year of my employment, the business had slowed considerable and the executive level management team had changed. I was worried that NetApp was falling behind on innovation compared to some of its competitors and the numerous start ups that had sprung up.

Pros

This company has a great working atmosphere. Compensation & benefits to employees especially in RTP office are great. Lot of self driven people. The company offers opportunities to grow technically not just through the work but other initiatives as well. Unlike most companies out there, people love to share, explain or disseminate knowledge which is always a great help. Managers maintain clear communications with their teams about the charter and expectations.

Cons

Playing catch up in a very dynamic business environment which can create undesired pressure among teams even though it's not the company's core culture, probably due to bad business foresight. Company has seen workforce cut due to that as well as slowdown in technical innovation as this big machine has a lot of moving parts today. Sometimes engineers with experience tend to be underpaid as compared to new UGH.

So sad

Pros

Still some good people there that are just trying to hang on. Unfortunately, this desperation only fuels a "kill or be killed" mentality. Big hiring of folks in Level 1 for Lake Mary and Convergys and construction is in progress in India for the new 10-story NetApp building.

Cons

The executive leadership is still trying to sell the "culture" proposition. The truth is that cDOT is a dud - it's way too complicated to use, (nowhere near as elegant as 7-mode was) and any commands you use to ascertain the status of a particular portion of your cluster will result in you getting some information that may/may not have some bearing on what you're trying to know about. There isn't really a cloud strategy unless you count being one of 500+ vendors for AWS. The whole "Data Fabric" marketing gee-whiz was assembled by people who don't really understand that IT folks already use the word "data fabric" for actual backend processes. A policy of mid and end of year shutdowns forces employees to take vacation days, so even though you might be entitled to two weeks of vacation, that winds up being 8 days. Healthcare has gradually been diminishing over time with the push from HR towards HSAs and limiting the choice of pharmacy providers (this year its CVS). Bonuses were minimal last year, there were no raises, and no RSUs issued. They even cancelled the Xmas party. It's all downhill from here.
