Pros

Netapp was a great place to work early on and the _technical_ people were great to work with. I had some really smart peers and mentors.

Cons

Early on, the company was small and had a startup mentality but after RTP started to expand into the second and third buildings mediocre management stepped in and really made things backwards.

Pros

Nice campus and facilities. Volunteer time off.

Cons

Company shutdowns force one to use vacation days or take days w/o pay ... effectively reducing your salary. Process, process, process. Too much process. Nobody is empowered to do anything or make any decisions. Too many layers of management, most of it wasting resources already in short supply. Too much time and effort spent on meta issues and meta-meta issues. Too much emphasis on being nice and polite _all_ the time. No room for those that don't drink the Kool-Aid. Management too focused on managing Wall Street numbers. Too worried about "optics" and spinning metrics.

Pros

Successful product backed by a strong sales force A lot of technology to sink your teeth into Typical big-company compensation and benefits Many capable and nice coworkers

Cons

Super slow pace. Many talented and dynamic people get frustrated and leave. Dumb processes. Productivity is appalling. Tools and mindset are 30 years old. Very hierarchical. Decisions are handed down without explanation. Engineers are just workers. Increasingly political. NetApp was once blessedly free of politics, but not any more. Stagnant. Gigantic technical debt. "Top priorities" are not linked to any sort of fresh thinking. Institutional paralysis. Even when everyone can see that something doesn't work, we keep right on doing it. The right conversations never take place. Innovation has been bred out of the population, especially on the management side.
