Pros

Big budgets, low accountability, not held responsible for any failure you may bring and as long as you dress it up you will be promoted before found out. Great place to get your mates to give you a job regardless if you are capable Once in a role you will have a job until retirement The CIO is the worst on the planet but you can still hire expensive interims using taxpayer money and make yourself look good

Cons

If you are a taxpayer or care about having a decent railway in the UK all the 'pros' above are a con. If you are not good enough to survive in the real world come to NR and get a big salary and a big job title.

Not Veteran-Friendly – Mental Health Support Poor

Pros

Job could have been great with the right management in place.

Cons

Toxic bullying culture masked by fake smiles and “wellbeing” posters Clique-based management – boys’ clubs, yes-men, and promotions based on popularity “Flying monkey” mentality among some signallers who enable toxic behaviour Falsifying documents and manipulating investigation outcomes to protect favourites Health and safety ignored when it’s inconvenient — even during serious incidents NHS mental health support excluded from meetings, despite PTSD disclosure Reasonable adjustments denied or delayed repeatedly Whistleblowing leads to retaliation, not resolution If you’re ex-military, or speak up — prepare to be labelled the issue

Pros

It's all about the wonga £££

Cons

Absolutely dreadful company to work for. A rife bullying culture with Managers and HR who not only enable these behaviours but actively join in. If you DARE to have the audacity to speak up, they close ranks and make you the fall guy. One racist, bigoted Senior Controller (who hated women, people of colour, gays, catholics and anyone with a backbone) took to placing vindictive, sick and insulting letters into my locker - rather than dealing with him, they made me the scapegoat! It got so bad I was humiliated on a daily basis by Managers and Senior Managers. My mental health suffered so badly I suffered a miscarriage as a result of the stress. After raising a grievance, the pressure mounted and the poison spread. I was put on gardening leave then forced to return just before my maternity leave began having (thankfully) become pregnant again. On my return. I was put to work in a cupboard for weeks undertaking the (purposefully) demeaning task of shredding paper - as instructed by a SENIOR MANAGER. I would be physically sick at the thought of going into that place of work, BUT I was determined they would not force me out. When my grievance reached the top man - the Route Director no less - he also took the easy way out and sided with those responsible instead of addressing the ROOT CAUSE! They tried in vain to oust me from the company by placing me in another demeaning role. I eventually had enough and took a redundancy package. Now, after many years away from the company (at the cost of hundred of thousands of pounds to myself), I come across an article where they claim they have an anti-bullying culture! This is an out and out lie. They are bullies on every level - all the way up to the Route Director. Thankfully, many of the dinosaurs I encountered will now be retired or dead.
