Pros

Friendly people. Flexible working. Large organisation with lots of opportunities. National profile. Always trying to improve. Pays reasonably well with bonus scheme and employee benefits.

Cons

Sometimes change isn't managed well. Being a large organisation means it is hard to drive consistency. Doesn't always learn from past mistakes. Heavily dependent on Government funding. Often portrayed negatively in the media. Parts of the organisation are highly unionised which sometimes holds back progressive thinking.

Pros

I work with so many great people who are focused on improving what we do as an organisation. There is a friendly, supportive and welcoming team environment with lots of opportunity for training and progression - whether that is to move upwards or to move into different areas of the business. My experience is that the company gets the balance right between providing support and giving autonomy, you are your given responsibility for your area which I really love. A key selling point for me is the work life balance and Network Rail do a lot to help facilitate this, with a real focus on health and well being. For example, here at Milton Keynes we have an on site gym, a variety of sports &social clubs and a huge number of ongoing sports, charity and other social events. This is a huge organisation and you are constantly learning. I joined 2 years ago and at the time I had very little idea about what Network Rail did as a business. Working across different projects, getting out on track and just taking opportunities that have been offered have really helped me understand how complex and important our business is to the UK.

Cons

We've often focused more on process and not so much on outcomes. I'm glad to say there is a huge cultural shift towards continuous improvement and lean systems. Conversations are now focusing around results rather than processes and this is really positive for us as a company.

Pros

The benefits are good, and the flexible working is handy.

Cons

Being such a large company, there are a number of frustrations with trying to 'get things done'. Just knowing the right department is difficult, let alone the right area or person! Behaviours among the senior managers sometimes leave a lot to be desired, it seems like some of them are from the dark ages in the way that they speak to people.
