Depressing.

Pros

Wonderful, diverse students, many of whom are first generation. Fantastic student workers who perform a lot of critical duties throughout the university, including parking enforcement.

Cons

Very empty, run down, depressing campus. Boring city and boring area of the country. Super high employee turnover rate, lots of negativity, and poor employee morale. The university has severe financial problems. Poorly organized. The state does not want to finance the university properly. Enrollment is dropping. Top talent avoids working there.

Pros

NMSU, located in a small, tri-cultural city in the largely poor, conservative southern half of the state, should be well placed to provide many positive impacts on the community.

Cons

Unfortunately, NMSU comes no where close to doing so. A horrible place to work: many administrators, faculty and staff are fearful; students are not challenged and significantly under served. I worked in the College of Arts and Sciences, which is the worst of NMSU's colleges and schools. The leadership of CAS is remarkably hostile to those who work within the College: fear and a prevailing sense of threat and intimidation are on its daily list of things to accomplish. No vision, nothing forward looking. The entire leadership should be replaced. If you are thinking about taking a job here, think twice.

Pros

Excellent leave policy, which you'll need to refresh your numbed mind. Many individual employees are excellent and motivated...for a while. Unfortunately the institutional culture places invisible handcuffs on almost everyone very soon after hiring. Interpersonally, colleagues are tremendously friendly and there are a lot of very warm and kind people here. That's a function of New Mexico.

Cons

For a motivated employee, this institution has no courage and no vision to support any kind of meaningful initiative. Salaries are embarrassingly low, and posted salary tables are fiction: don't expect to get offered anything more than the beginning of the scale, regardless of merit.
