Pros

It is a job. It pays.

Cons

This company cares very little about you. Don't count on them to stand up for you and what you earn. You make a very small percentage of the revenue you generate. They purposefully avoid questions that they do not want to answer regarding possibility of pay being decreased again with artful usage of numbers during company pep rallies. Their transparency is as strategic as their marketing for customers. Trust no one. This is a toxic environment. You can taste the bitterness in the air.

Pros

There are so many divisions and roles, in the corporate office, that career opportunities are numerous.

Cons

It was shocking how comfortable the company is being transparent about how little it actually cares about their employees. Most new benefits or improvements are done not with the employees in mind, but to either "save face" or remain relevant to competition. For example, there was a roll-out of new salary pay bands, Career Framework, and it is obvious that that it was not done to help employees but to give the company the appearance of having competitive salaries. Leaders were told that HR does not know how they are going to handle huge pay increases for future promotions to employees now at the bottom of their current pay band. In addition, the Open Door policy is a policy in name but not in practice. Many employees are fearful of going to HR with complaints because doing so will result in termination. These sort of things never get exposed because of the historic "promote from within" practice conditions employees to believe that they should be grateful that they have a job in the corporate office and never complain.

Pros

Still a lot of good people who are fun to work with and will help contribute to your personal growth. If you're on a good team, you can probably expand technical knowledge.

Cons

Lack of C-level or VP-level technical leadership to guide the organization toward technical evolution that aligns with delivering business value. In many areas getting work done is complicated by politics and/or a lack of commitment. Very inefficient environment. Feels like a lot of good people left, leaving, or trying to figure-out how to get out.

I appreciate your sharing this issue with us, especially as we continue our work streamlining our processes across teams. This begins with the way our managers uphold Nordstrom’s commitment to giving employees ownership over their own work, and I apologize if we missed the mark during your time with us. As we work to improve, it would be very helpful to hear more details about your experience so that we can resolve inefficiencies and learn where we can go from here. If you have the time, please send me a personal message at NordTechFeedback@nordstrom.com with any further input you can provide. Sincerely, Patrick Welch VP Technology Nordstrom
