Pros

Cons

There aren't enough words to describe the wholly corrupt and awful world of Norfolk Southern. Our CEO is pimping us out to UP for a cushy board position, capital omvestment is down with zero regard for public safety, track integrity, worker safety, or potential slowdowns due to track conditions. The union is also corrupt, has moved to 5 year contracts that benefit the shareholders much more than the workers, and their talking heads have enough brains to gaslight any inquiries or concerns, then you will see posts with pictures of them wining and dining with executives. Norfolk Southern will drain your life force, snuff your spark, and keep you in a position where there aren't viable options to leave. They will own you until your retire and die too young to enjoy it. My biggest concern is the innocent lives that will be experience irreversible harm or loss at the hands of the true mission, which is to deliver value to the shareholders at any cost-even if that includes human life. We have mainline tracks that are a danger to the train crews, workers, passengers, and communities they pass through. All of this while capital investments in track maintenance are being undercut to make us leaner and meaner. It only makes us more diabolical. I question my own morality for working and giving my working years to this organization.

Pros

Pay, Retirement, Benefits. That is all.

Cons

No one seems to care about you at all. When I arrived at my location, my point of contact for my job location was nowhere to be found, EVER. His office would be vacant for most of the day. You call him? No answer. You text him? He might answer hours later. With the few conversations I had with him over the phone, he would just let me come into work and leave work whenever I wanted and work whatever days I wanted. Don't get me wrong, that does sound very nice, but when you have limited time to learn everything before you are thrown into the deep end it only hurts you in the end to not spend a proficient amount of time on the job learning everything. You don't really do much in training. The most you will do is sit beside someone in the tower while they do data entry for 12 hours, along with answering a million phone calls. Then, another day you will be in the field driving in circles for 12 hours around the yard taking crews to and from their train. The work/life balance is also bad. You will work a minimum of 12 hours a day. This number can increase depending on the day. Sometimes you will be working during the day, sometimes you will be working overnight.
