Pros

Stability, benefits, and salary are all very nice. It's a great first job for any engineer. Rotational assignments are a possibility when starting as well. There are a myriad of different job types, job locations, and people that you will work with at NG. Chances are, you'll find your niche while working there. The work environment is minimally stressful as well. Defense schedules are generally more drawn out and forgiving then private industry engineering. The work/life balance is quality as well as NG allows for a 9/80 schedule and very flexible work hours (depending on your immediate manager). Benefits, vacation, etc. are all comparable to other defense contractors.

Cons

Morally, you are part of the enormous war-making machine that is the defense industry. Also, at a company the size of NG, feeling like an employee number is typical.

Pros

Ability to work on technology to support the warfighter. The plant is run quite efficiently, most engineers are able to get work done without being interupted on an hourly basis. The Christmas shutdown is very nice...you get a long time off without having to burn vacation days. The atmosphere here is friendly, condusive to learning. A major benefit is the education program. They will cover tuition to go back to school (undergrad and graduate work), with no contract or repayment plan. There are plenty of after-hours events planned,as well as local area discounts. Overall it's a really great place to work.

Cons

Medical benefits cost the employee more than the competetors. There is a lot of competition in the central florida area, and sometimes Northrop struggles to keep up. Vacation is based on the accrual system, which means no major vacations the first year. The cafe in the main building is pretty terrible; have heard of numerous people getting sick after eating there. Pay increases have a hard time keeping up with the inflation rate (certainly can not keep up with the rise in gas prices). The company is still not on a 9/80 program. Blackberries tend to disrupt meetings and days off.

Pros

As a good patriotic company, Northrop Grumman will cover your pay for jury duty and they pay 6 weeks salary if you have a child (for mother and father). My experience is that Northrop Grumman tries to produce high quality work rather than just enough to get a contract and move on. This results in a lot of repeat business, so even as a contractor, you can get very long term employment with the same department. My immediate management has done a good job at taking care of me and they are good at minimizing office politics. All in all, I found working for Northrop Grumman to be a positive experience.

Cons

I feel that my salary is a little week. Also, as I work on site for the federal government, I am subject to the high levels of insanity that come with the job. Often I feel like one of the office clerks in the movie 'Brazil', but this is not a direct result of working for Northrop Grumman, but rather working for the feds.
