Pros

Job Security, exposure to cutting edge technology. Decent leadership is generally on your side.

Cons

They do not pay competitively to retain talent. basically once you have a security clearance at the top secret level, they know you'll want to tend to keep it and not just give it up by leaving. So if you're in a state without a lot of competition for defense work/cleared professionals, they know they've got you right where they want you and promotion and competitive pay is not going to happen without bouncing around in the company. While that is allowed, it's a pain with HR taking MONTHS for anything to happen. Also, you're at the mercy of government funding and I've been burned so far with every program being cut unexpectedly and you're stuck looking for a place to land. While they generally won't lay off when times are good, this is bound to catch up with you when defense spending slows down. Oh and health care is atrocious. 12k max out of pocket is too much.

Pros

all the things everybody else have said it's true. but there is a dark side that people should be aware of.

Cons

I was fired in March of 2018 because I had 5 minor security violations 1and with a TS/SCI. However, I was working on a Secret project. The last day they told me my clearance is intact. However, after a month of interviewing and almost getting a job, I found out there has been a LOJ (Lost of Juristiction) with CAF report put on my record because one of the violations the ISSM had to report to the government. However, the incident was caused for over 5 years prior which the people who actually responsible were retired and long gone. My manager which I believe stood by me and gave me a raise every because I was good employee and got the jobs done. But ultimately the decision was made by security. The managers and the security team doesn't know all the things going on. Maybe eventually they do which by that point it may be too late.
