Pros

It is going to be an in-depth review for those who wish to work for this company in the future, this one would be for you. There are only a couple of positives that I can list on here; - Some good colleagues to work with like everywhere else - The learners are very respectful depending on which prison you work obviously, but they are very kind towards the teachers and some genuinely want to change so they are very eager to learn, compared to college students who are doing their GCSEs.

Cons

I will be as transparent as I can so if you are reading this, please bear with me. -> Unbelievable amount of unnecessary paperwork - What do I mean by this? I mean, you will have to write the same things over and over again in different documents to satisfy your managers and the company. Prepare the waste an hour to 1 student by writing the same things on the same documents with different names. -> Working hours are long and 1 hour unpaid lunch break :D So, this one is a joke. You work 8-5 and 1 hour unpaid lunch break, so many of you will think I cant seem to understand why would it be a con? If you want to use your phone or get outside of the prison, you have to walk to the front gate and by the time you get out it is 12:15, so you have to come back 12:45 to get back in on time. If you are getting out of the prison, you will only have 30 mins of lunch break. Good luck trying to utilise an hour lunch break. Some cant even have lunch because they have got so much catching up to do.. If you do that, do not expect appreciation as you will get none. -> I was originally employed to teach Maths, now I teach 40% maths, rest is different classes and even LSP work without any extra pay or any time off. This was done to me without prior notice or knowledge, I was given a time table and that was it. As a maths teacher, English, ESOL, LSP is not my forte but they can't seem to understand it. No respect for boundaries, in fact, when I wanted to discuss it, I was threatened with misconduct because of the contract. -> Every week expect more workload because every week there will be changes and you will be asked to implement the changes ASAP. If you fail to comply, misconduct issue. There is NO CONSISTENCY, all you see is terrible and chaotic management. -> My favourite, Curriculum Dev Time aka Admin Time; IT DOESNT EXIST. You will be given that time on your time table, on paper work it exists. However, regularly, they will ask you to cover a class, INVIGILATE or be given a task to make sure you won't get it. When they ask, why nothing is being done, they seem to ignore the fact that you never get a time to do anything. -> Some people are on OLD CONTRACTS, meaning they will be working less hours with lesser workload than you but will be getting paid more than you. Be prepared for hypocrisy and mistreatment. -> No TRAINING - NO SUPPORT. Most of us know what this means, but let me be clear, if you are stressed, anxious or ill, there would not be anyone to help you. They DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH or YOUR WELLBEING. In fact, you will be threatened with misconduct or disciplinary. -> Most managers do not come from teaching background or have the qualification. Good Luck reasoning with these people as they don't understand you, set unachievable targets for you to deliver. -> UNPAID SICK LEAVE and RETURN TO WORK FORM So, I got ill twice in the last 5 months as you would expect that you are not working in the most hygienic place. If you are absent 3 times in 6 months, you will be called in for a meeting. What a JOKE! -> UNDER-*PAY You will be UNDERPAID, OVERWORKED and MISTREATED. Don't you think oh, but there is London Weighing, the money they offer in regards to what you are expected to do, is so low that good luck trying to live in London. -> Really TOXIC PEOPLE to work with. Some people think that they can bully you because you refuse to be within their friendzone. They will talk behind your back, they will complain about you about petty things. You either with these people, or stand against them in their own idea. -> UNHEALTHY WORKING ENVIRONMENT You will be asked to carry heavy loads to classrooms, ( carrying heavy box full of learner work in narrow stairs ) Sometimes the classrooms will be freezing cold because there wont be any heating. They are so obsessed with Health and Safety, however, look at what they offer. -> SCAM EARLY FINISH on Fridays 8am to 1pm certainly half day with no break. -> UNORGANISED, INCONSISTENT, CHAOTIC You will be pushed to extreme. They will expect you to be organised in a chaotic place and change everything every week or every two weeks and you will always be subject to rushed decisions. It is never their fault, there is always someone else to blame starting from yourself to everyone else around you.. -> NO CAREER PROGRESSION You will mentally die in this place. -> HOLIDAY TIMES You need to book your holidays 6 months in advance or risk losing it. Good luck making plans if you have got children or want to visit a family. You can only get 10days in a row as a holiday meanwhile Head Office staff gets 15 days in a row, totally UN-fair. Overall, I had some doubts before joining this company as in the interview they sugar coated this job and after the interview, the reality is so different that, every day I ask myself, what did I sign up to.. In the interview I asked about most of these questions and the answers were like yes, all is well, we help, support and etc. I was told that this job was similar to college jobs ( I come from teaching in college background ) and admin is just a little bit more compared to colleges. I was a fool to believe.. I regret taking this job and believing in these people. Everything in this company is all about their image, ticking their own boxes so the funding shouldn't stop so that the top management would carry on earning loads more while teachers struggle. I am actively looking for a job and will get out as soon as possible. Think twice before joining this company. Thanks for reading.
