Ocean Spray has become a true clown show.

Pros

The best part of Ocean Spray is the way your co-workers (hourly employees) feel like a family.

Cons

"Senior Leadership Team" is a joke at the corporate and plant level. There are people running machines who are not qualified on them and/or have been disqualified on them. The system of job bidding has disappeared and management just plugs people in wherever. Morale is low and no one cares. Supervision thinks they know it all and do not listen to the operators. Supervisors act like they care about you, but in reality they just want you to hit target so they can get their precious bonus. Several hourly employees have left over the last couple of years, and when you see them in public and talk to them, every single one of them says they are happier and feel like dead weight has been lifted off of their shoulders.

Pros

Beautiful Lakeville campus Half day Fridays in the summer ( at corporate) Good benefits

Cons

Poor communication - every meeting talks about open and honest communication but that never truly happens. Bad low level management - bad lower level management and when you go to HR about the issues you get no where. No advancements - as much as upper management and HR talk about all of the amazing opportunity to advance your career, it never happens, if you do not have an MBA you will go no where and be in a dead end job.

Thank you for sharing your view. It can be hard when folks, especially in a supervisory position, are not fully engaged in a company’s transformation—culturally we are working to change that and appreciate your honesty. Communication is not just “for show.” It is a foundational element of how we operate: with honesty, with transparency and with many opportunities to have dialogue with each other and with leadership—forums, engagement surveys, department meetings, technology advancements and more. Staying connected and engaged is how we stay on strategy and on a successful path. Success also takes talent—creating “bench strength” is a must for any company, and a top priority for Ocean Spray that we achieve through a variety of career development programs and opportunities.

Pros

Working for the family growers, it's their livelihood and "ups" the motivation to keep the business going

Cons

Focus appears to be on creating buzz around Boston office and attracting Millennials versus dealing with a business in crisis. CEO says goal is "food as medicine". Food is culture, love, and joy! When we turn food into medicine and cultivate an “eat to live” mentality, we remove everything else from food. If we pretend that food is just nutrients or a means to heal disease, we erase memories, celebrations, and human connection.

Thanks for commenting. We couldn’t agree with you more—food is culture, love, joy and so many other things—including medicine for the soul. What we need to reframe here is that “food is medicine” is not a strategy, it’s a part of our destination as a cooperative—a way of thinking differently, diversifying our portfolio of products, and connecting our farms (and those incredible berries we love) to families for a better life. The Lighthouse™ -- Ocean Spray’s marketing and innovation hub in Boston-- is an important component of our new approach to innovation, marketing, product development, and partnerships with like-minded leaders in the industry. Our business is not in crisis, its in transformation, so we understand that stretching and changing can feel hard sometimes. But know we are on a successful path, one that is already (please pardon the pun) bearing fruit now and for the future.
