Pros

Great peers, close to home, and charitable work.

Cons

Does anyone see what I see? Every time there is a string of critical reviews, the corporate hacks then produce a string of positive reviews. If not from corporate, then the pressure people in the field to produce positive reviews. They have been doing this for years in order to manipulate the company ratings. How about instead of looking to manipulate the ratings, you take the feedback and make meaningful changes to how you operate. Did someone say targeting? If the name wasn't already taken, the appropriate name for them would be Target. I have had exposure tow the RDs in R1 and R2, both are all about themselves, openly target DTL's and STL's that don't kiss up to them, and they are killing the business because they have no knowledge of the business. This is a compliance or else atmosphere. If you can act like a human bobble head doll, check your integrity at the door, and kiss up.....this is a great place for you. If not, keep on moving and donlt let them con you into joining.

Pros

The hiring department is effective and engaging

Cons

First, it's a 100% fear based culture. They treat employees like disposable objects and not like human beings. If you make one perceived mistake you are gone. Second, HR is completely running the show, not the managers. This is the result of the fear based culture. Even DMs are afraid to make decisions so they pass the decision making on to HR. You can't blame them. Even the DM will be fired for one perceived mistake. Unfortunately, HR is just getting it so wrong. Third, no one wants to work there. They just landed there because their previous employer went out of business or their position was eliminated. No employee says "we" when referring to OCJL. Only "we" at Staples used to or "we" at Khols would. That's very telling.' I'm sure you are reading a lot of reviews. But stop. Just stop. And think about what I wrote. If you are just looking for some job, then go ahead and apply. If you are looking for a place to be happy then move on.

Thank you for the post. It's unfortunate when those who leave for good business reasons try and flip the conversation. HR is a business partner and the business teams make people decisions. This company also has one of the best payroll budgets in retail. We wish you the best of luck and hope it turns out better for you.

Pros

OSJL seems to be a great company to work for if you live close to their headquarters in Rhode Island. In a time where retail is seriously struggling, Job Lot is growing and opening stores every year. Improvements are constantly being made, be they technological, policy focused, etc. Associates have a generous 20% discount, with occasional 30% off shopping days. The part time benefits are nice compared to other retailers, and annual profit sharing is a nice surprise. There are many opportunities to move up in the company, as OSJL likes to promote from within. There are also various donation programs throughout the year that aim to benefit local communities.

Cons

Do not be fooled, most of the reviews on this website are from employees working in the corporate office. My experience working for OSJL has been very disappointing. My store has been open for three years, and so far, we have had a different manager each year. Under the current store manager morale has plummeted and the stores turnover rate has skyrocketed, which can’t be good for business. The workplace has turned toxic, everybody is constantly miserable and complaining about the store manager, even other store management. Half of the employees have complained MULTIPLE TIMES over the course of a year to HR, going as far as recording dates and times the manager has broken policy and bullied associates. Absolutely nothing has been done. Without the assistant managers the store would almost certainly have collapsed. They constantly fix the store managers mistakes, console disgruntled employees, and train employee after employee only to train even more when new hires quit. To make matters worse, one of the assistant managers is being transferred now, leaving the store short handed in terms of management, when we are already struggling with the lack of hourly associates. The district manager overseeing all the New Jersey stores is an embarrassment to OSJL and its values. There is a major lack of communication between him and store management (except for my store manager who has worked for him for other companies). The pay is not competitive, and the stores are dirty and cheap. The cash registers leave little to be desired, and the inventory management is atrocious. The company is definitely having some growing pains!
