Only people pleasers get ahead here
Pros
Good pay, nice trucks, plenty of work
Cons
Please read all of this if you are new to od or thinking about hiring on with them. I was with them for 7 years and I still have some residual habits and fears instilled in me by the rapacious ways of od. I have nightmares of still being there all the time plus ptsd. Follow these guidelines and things will be much better for you. 1 Always stand up for yourself, speak your mind, and never let anyone walk all over you. The consequences of this mindset will always be better than remaining silent. You get to keep your dignity and won't think about what you could of done so much. 2 Never let good pay excuse the unethical and selfish actions of a company. Don't let yourself get bought out by this place. 3 Don't tell yourself there's nowhere else to go. Thats a mindset that management at od tricks you into thinking because they want you to feel trapped. It was said in almost every monthly meeting that od is as good as it gets and if you leave, you'll regret it and come back. An abusive spouse says the same thing. Think about that for a moment. 4 Never sign anything you disagree with, even if they threaten to fire you if you don't. These are bluffs. Your dignity is way more important than cowardly threats being met. 5 Always try to address any problems you have the minute they arise. If they fail to address them, it's time to leave. It's only downhill if you stay. New doors will open up. 6 No matter what, always take at least 10 minutes to do a good pre-trip. Od is big on monitoring yard time and many other things with sensors on the trucks. Don't let them rush you out of doing your pre-trips. Protect your cdl. 7 Always take your 30 minute break. Do it everyday around the same time. Don't let them trick you into skipping it and taking it later. You won't get one at all if you do that. Stand firm. Establish a pattern. I was with od for 7 years. The freight was always more important than the drivers. I was out during severe weather, including tornadic weather, so many times I lost count. My route was moore/norman. They told me to pull over if it gets bad, which I had to do twice on the same night once. I told them I was driving right into where there was a tornado warning, and they said to just be careful. My wife almost went to the terminal the next day to tell them I quit. She was absolutely furious, but I was used to being treated that way. I never kissed up to anyone at this place. If you're extroverted and a happy go lucky kind of a person that just accepts things for the way they are, this is your place. You don't even have to work very hard if that's our additude. If you're all business like me, quiet, and honest, things can be hard for you. You can make it work though. Introverted people always have to work harder at everything to be successful. Things got worse for me every year I stayed there. Most people had consistent schedules, but mine was all over the place. I never got used to it and was tired all the time because of it. The scales at the terminal are off, so make sure you weigh at a Cat scale and go off that. Don't let them run you if you're overweight. Don't sign a writeup if you refuse to run overweight. Always stand your ground. Looking back, I wished I would of followed my own advice, but I didn't until I had been there 6 1/2 years and it all came out at once. I quit but then got talked into staying. I was honest with my boss for the first time in a long time about how horrible things had gotten. After that, I was a ghost there and decided 6 months after that conversation to leave. The damage was not repairable. Everybody says I look happier now and not tired all the time. I agree. Thats priceless. Leaving od was the healthiest thing I have ever done. My stress levels are way down and I'm not angry at the end of every day. When you have something important to say, you need to say it. Silence can be a lie.
