Pros

OpenTable pays very well for the industry

Cons

If you have not worked at the company for 3+ years and are coming in new good luck. There are only company wide trainings for sales and service positions. Management expected me to understand every tool they use without ever being trained. My manager had no desire to train or develop me and even told me "I forget you weren't an internal hire and didn't know things". I trained myself fully and my manager was non existent. This company also has no problem just letting people go instead of developing them. Management would talk about people getting fired like it was no big deal.

Pros

good pto, holiday time. some employees are kind and nice to work with, but most are all afraid right now to speak their mind unfortunately. work life balance is good only if you vouch for yourself and set boundaries

Cons

since new Exec leadership (Debby Soo) from Kayak came over 4 years ago, the previous amazing culture has done a complete 180 shift from inclusive/open to now toxic and micro managing. and this is for all departments, from product to engineering to revenue operations. they have been doing silent layoffs (handful at a time) every few weeks for 8 months and counting. you see the pattern, letting go top performers who are paid high salaries and also top performers paid average salaries to later open positions at much lower salary ranges. this leaves every employee at the company living in a constant day to day fear they may be next. so no one is happy, and you can really tell when on Zoom calls with them that people no longer have that same happy light that they use to have. many non-qualified people in mgmt roles rule with a stick and are not open to hearing feedback from their people. they think that they "at mgmt level" know best and that people just need to do what they say. These new managers are trying to make drastic changes because they want to show that they can move the needle. however, collaboration is key to success. a true leader listens. most mgmt levels across all depts are making critical decisions when they do not know as much of the details as the people closest to the problem. current employees still at company are stressed because they have more work being piled on with less people while at the same time fearing their job could be on the line. people spend majority of their time at work... its a very unhealthy culture at OpenTable and for people's mental health. how execs are so clueless at how their employees really feels is baffling. in the past, for company wide surveys, they use to share the entire results with everyone...in this last year, they stopped sharing every single question...we know why! in company all-hands, you can really feel the unauthentic tone of Debby, the CEO. over the years, you'd watch how she acts like she loves her other execs (previous CTO and head of product). you can tell it was fake, and then a little bit later, those 2 execs were gone. and you realize you were right in your intuition on how she comes across. its like watching someone trying to make it as an actor in Hollywood, and its pretty cringey. if you're going to be ruling the company with a stick and not collaborative, then at least act the way that you really are.

Pros

The management is flexible to life and work balance. The co-workers were encouraged to be respectful and courteous to each other as well as to the customers. Very good benefits.

Cons

The weekday employees and account managers take a week off twice a year, with no acknowledgment to the lower workers working 24/7 who must handle the customers. There used to be comp days given to the lower employees but when I left, that was taken away. The upper corporate managers promised no layoffs, however, nearly 60 employees were laid off abruptly in 2023.

Pros

1) Great pay, sign on bonus, and ESO 2) Comprehensive benefits and RRSP matching 3) Work from home (at the time)

Cons

1. Poor Leadership: I was the only female on a small team of three. When I asked my manager for help retrieving data that wasn’t available in our system, I was ridiculed and undermined. Despite querying data not being part of my role, my manager had suggested it, only to respond dismissively when I kindly requested his assistance. His response was, “I thought you had an MBA. Don’t they teach you that in an MBA?” For context, I don’t have an MBA, but I do hold a master’s degree in a related field, which wasn’t a requirement for my position at OpenTable. Ultimately, I was fired and replaced by a male colleague. My manager was also absent for 75% of my probation period. OpenTable needs to prioritize hiring leaders, not just managers. 2. Unfair Advantage for Those in Office: During my interview process, OpenTable was fully remote, aligning with the company’s mission of promoting travel and flexibility. However, it quickly became apparent that employees with access to an office were given preferential treatment, advancing faster in their careers than those who worked remotely. Four months into my role, the company shifted to a hybrid model, which further widened the gap, creating an even more competitive environment for career growth. 3. Outdated Technology; OpenTable faces significant challenges when it comes to innovation and technological advancement. The company’s outdated tech infrastructure creates barriers to creativity, new ideas, and modern design, severely limiting its potential to evolve. 4. Slack: Surprisingly, for a company of this size, Slack is the primary communication tool. While effective for smaller teams, this reliance feels lacklustre for a global organization.
