Pros

New grads will get a lot of oversight but no chance to learn to think independently. I guess some people like that.

Cons

Terrible turnover. Frequently you will witness massive exodus of NPs. I have seen a whole team of NPs to resign within 2 month. Micromanagement at its worst. Independent clinical decision making is discouraged. Management makes it clear to NPs how dispensable they are.

Just Average.

Pros

I believe that Optum and United Healthcare are trying in a lot of areas. -There was a quick adaptation to at home work, and safety protocols for travel during COVID. - I believe that their salaries are decently competitive.

Cons

Optum is part of United Health Group which is massive. These companies are both not one big company but a congregation of many smaller companies. Things are really siloed and things from benefits to management directives vary greatly from silo to silo. - Benefits are overhyped, specifically tuition reimbursement, your education not only has to be directly related to your job, the reimbursement amount has to be in your department budget. If you haven't asked about the specific classes and got them approved for payment by your manager and they must be in your department budget. they won't pay it. - There are a lot of people who have been here for many years (10+) and they aren't always in touch with the latest techniques and technologies. - A lot of lip service about equality and diversity in the business. To me it is just lip service.

Great colleagues, mediocre executives

Pros

Interesting work, great colleagues, decent work-life balance, okay pay.

Cons

The executives become filthy rich while denying coverage to many. They say they are in it to improvement healthcare for everyone. They are in it to make money for their shareholders and fill up their pockets. If you like working for a bunch of middle aged, white men, who look after each other, then have at it. Anyone can google Andrew Witty and see he was either a criminal or incompetent. He was CEO at GSK when the two biggest frauds in pharmaceutical history occurred. Why did Optum hire him? Why did UHG make him CEO? Because rich board members protect and promote their own kind.
