Too Big, Too Complicated

Pros

Good benefits, many positions are work-from-home, outstanding technology and 24/7 tech support.

Cons

Optum is a United Healthgroup company, HUGE corporation, very process-driven. After almost 15 years, I'm opting for a smaller company where I can feel closer to my results. Optum is too big, too complicated, too difficult to get any real work done. So invested in the technology and all the ways to communicate, that it's easy for your ENTIRE job to become communicating... never having enough time to do your actual work. Bigger isn't better. Lastly, work at home can be deceiving... you're actually ALWAYS working. Company doesn't really walk the talk about balance, everyone works at all hours of day and night.

Pros

Impossible to get fired from the company (that's what my trainer told me on graduation day) training is 6 weeks long and it's very thorough. The health insurance is cheap on your paycheck. Since it's a healthcare company I think it's discounted. Benefits start right away. If you work inside the United Healthcare building there is a credit union that is easy to sign up with, as well as a cafeteria with healthy food options. They also have a Starbucks inside.

Cons

You are expected to finish your calls fast, management is constantly breathing down your neck. I truly didn't feel like I was a patient care advocate because any time I attempted to go above and beyond for a patient I was pulled aside due to my calls going over the 2 minute standard. Very little PTO, low salary, exhausting days of angry sick people yelling at you.

Pros

Opportunities to work from home

Cons

Everything comes down to your metrics. There is no value in being a good nurse and taking care of your members.
