Pros

Orkin seems to have a knack for hiring people who are truly the salt of the earth. Part of what kept me there for nearly seven years was my co-workers. Until the management of my particular department changed, I never had a single day where I dreaded going to work. I knew that I would work hard, but I'd have a lot of laughs, and that there were people there who truly cared for and about me.

Cons

For such a successful, nationwide company, the benefits are seriously lacking. As a single-income household, I couldn't afford medical insurance through my own company, and that's inexcusable. Also, upper management (and this is probably an issue in a lot of workplaces) really doesn't put a lot of stock in what they're told by those of us in more front line, "grass roots" positions. There's a lot of lip service given to the importance of Town Halls and Employee Surveys, but upper management tends to circle the wagons if asked to REALLY look at any problem(s).

Pros

The best thing about this company is that the management is very helpful and understanding about the needs of their employees. The training was top-tier in my opinion and I came out of it with a wide range of knowledge in the pest business. A lot of companies that require face to face interactions with customers do not give new people many tips on how to communicate with customers and what key words can be make or breaks when bidding out exclusion work or odd ball jobs. I think Orkin did a great job and their corporate structure is professionalism by definition.

Cons

The cons on this job are the hours, the training process, and the payment process. I will be a former employee here soon and when everything is said and done, I will have lost close to $2,000 bucks and have barely acquired any of that money back. You start work at 7am and you get done usually between 7-9pm. I had days during the summer where I didn't get done till almost 10pm. Considering that my route was about an hour from my house, getting home late only to wake up at 5am in the morning was not something that I was very interested in doing. Especially considering the money for the effort and long hours was extremely sub-par. When everything was said and done after putting in 60-70 hours every single week, the pay would be about 10 bucks an hour, no overtime. You can find a $12.00 an hour job around town, work the same hours, and come out ahead. In conclusion, I think this process may work in other parts of the country, but not around here. The market is much different in my opinion, and other companies are happy to foot the extra work that Orkin's Integrated Pest Management system simply doesn't cover.

Pros

General flexibility with schedule, recession-proof market, company car and paid fuel card, commission-structure is easy to understand

Cons

When you get paid depends on when the service is completed, while there are generally clear goals, management may constantly change them
