Pros

What makes OuterBox a great place to work? It's people, for one thing. Everyone, including the top leadership, gets along very well and works great together. I never hear complaining or infighting or even gossip. Every department I have interacted with is super helpful, especially when you are just starting out. Even working remotely this last year due to COVID I still feel connected to my co-workers and the company culture is great. The executive leadership is very proactive and responsive in making sure you have a good work/life balance and that your work needs are cared for. In my time here, I have personally seen how much the CEOs sincerely care about their employees. I don't feel some of the negative reviews that I see here are an accurate representation. Another great thing about working here is the flexible work schedule and generous PTO. There are a bunch of other perks and incentives. The bottom line is that it is a great place to work with competitive compensation and an opportunity for growth and development in digital marketing.

Cons

I can't really think of any "real" cons to mention.

Pros

I’ve throughly enjoyed my time at OuterBox, and while I’ve decided to pursue other opportunities in my career, I will always be grateful for being a part of this professional team of individuals. There is an abundance of learning opportunities at your fingertips, which is a huge plus for those looking to grow within the world of SEO. I eventually worked into more client-facing roles through my mentor who helped teach me the ropes of day-to-day strategy and communication. If you’re looking to progress, expand your skills, and pave a path forward in your career within a company, this is the place. Everyone is willing to help one another, especially new employees. I came on board as a new Specialist and felt right at home immediately. My colleagues were down-to-earth and I can proudly say I’ve made many good friends from my time at OuterBox. They also provide fantastic employee benefits, those of which can be hard to beat at other agencies, and the initial Specialist compensation is above industry averages. During COVID-19, HR put together remote Wednesday night video happy hour sessions, which were a great time to get to know coworkers outside of work.

Cons

Agency life is fast-paced with lots of moving parts, which may not be for everyone. Work-life balance quickly became a larger concern once acquiring more client-facing responsibilities, so staying on top of your work load and communicating honestly is important. The company is also growing incredibly fast, especially during the 10 months I was a part of the team. With that, comes the inevitable growing pains as the team gets larger, management changes, and responsibilities change hands.

Pros

I met some great people and made some lifelong friends working at OuterBox.

Cons

Buyer beware - the phrase "we're growing" is just HR spin for hiring. They're never growing in staff, they're constantly hiring to backfill the people who continuously quit. You're bound to find negative aspects to any job, whether you're in the corporate world or at an agency. Most of the time those negatives can be overlooked because the positives far outweigh the negatives. Sadly, at OuterBox, this wasn't the case. The numbers don't lie, during my tenure at OuterBox, EIGHT members of the SEO team (Strategists, Writers & Specialists) left the company and within the six months following my departure, an additional SEVEN members of the SEO team left. This is not an accident. OuterBox has some major retention issues, most of which are fueled by a poor management team and an executive leadership team that makes knee-jerk decisions and poorly thought out forced processes that are forgotten just about as quickly as they were mandated. The managers and senior strategists of the SEO department are the last to jump in to help others, if at all. These folks are happy to go home after their 8-5 day and let the rest of the team toil away working 70+ hours a week, just to stay afloat. That is not management or leadership. All the while, the sales team continues to sign new clients, much to the dismay of the overburdened & overworked SEO team.

We're a growing company and definitely, by no means, going backwards. We were at 50 people when the pandemic hit and now we're 70 💪. With that being said, we're hiring many new people and retaining our greatest assets, awesome team members, as well. Have some people left or been let go? Of course. We expect a lot. We value every dollar a client spends with us and if we cannot meet those standards or have performance issues we take it very seriously. Our culture is important and we expect each employee to value the others around them. At OuterBox, we schedule each team member for around 6 hours of work per day. If you're working 70 hours, something is wrong. We would never expect that and know that isn't a healthy work life balance. We'd hope anyone in that situation would reach out directly to management and owners as we know they would work personally with you to understand the core issue and resolve it. We've been on a great hiring spree bringing on TOP talent and we strive to continue to grow with the most talented people on our team!
