Pros

Paper had many talented, mission oriented individual contributors prior to recent layoffs.

Cons

- Product is more expensive and less effective than competitors - no product market fit and external facing employees are pulling teeth to get usage up at school districts - Company has had 3 rounds of mass layoffs in the past few months bringing corporate headcount from ~600 to ~250 in about 6 months time - Leadership is out of touch with the realities of what is happening in schools, districts, and the company - No development/growth opportunities - Pay is low relative to industry norm I would stay far away from Paper until they can get some of these issues sorted out.

Pros

Flexibility of schedule, work from home, and relatively decent pay.

Cons

As the company has grown, it has increasingly shown signs of creaking under its own weight. For example, firings of upper management roles have been happening without warning on a regular basis for some time now. It doesn't matter how wonderful your performance is or how much time you've been with the company - at this point many are going to work with no idea whether their job is in peril on any given day. This creates a lot of infrastructure instability for both the platform managers, and the tutors. I have been assigned 4 different Tutor Managers in my two years working there. It won't matter when I got to get a referral from this company for my performance for future jobs - there will likely be no one close enough to my (might I add: excellent) performance reviews left to know who I am. My main concerns center around its lack of respect for the front-line workers: the tutors themselves. Tutors are routinely paired with 3-5 students at a time (unbeknownst to the students, who are marketed to as getting personalize, one-on-one tutoring), and sometimes upwards of 8-11. As you can imagine, it's impossible to tutor realistically at this speed and pace, shuffling back and forth between windows of students while trying to rapid-fire field their questions in a dizzying array of subjects and homework assignments. I used to love this job when I started - feeling such enthusiasm for my students' and great joy after a successful session where real connection and learning was made. This is just not possible now. As a result, there have been several cases of mass exodus resignations by some of the best tutors we have lately. Paper's modus operandi is truly hard to understand at the moment, when they are gaining huge contracts with districts all over the United States and growing rapidly, but failing to hire and provide coverage to achieve the student-to-tutor ratio that would actually uphold their personalized tutoring marketing.
