Pros

Union benefits, secure feeling about future success of the company, mission behind the company, no screwing around, always busy. Company sort of feels like a family, many opportunites for switching jobs as well as free PCC cooks classes for employees.

Cons

No screwing around, always busy.

Worst job of my life

Pros

At least I had a union. Wish I had actually made use of it.

Cons

An extremely poorly run organization that seemed to be completely lacking in people skills. I was a checker/shelf stocker for three years and worked in various stores. I was subject on an almost daily basis to shaming, humiliation and often being screamed at by certain store directors. The first time I was yelled at was on a Tuesday about 10:00 am about ten minutes into my second week on the job. I actually thought for a moment that I was being "punked" on some reality TV program, and then I realized this person was serious. Apparently the store had run out of Henry Weinhardts beer over the weekend and there was an empty slot in the cooler and it was somehow my fault. When I underwent a delicate surgical procedure that kept me from doing heavy lifting for a couple of days my store director laughingly announced my condition to everyone in earshot. Here's how one of my reviews went (off the clock, after my shift, of course): On a scale of five I was accorded a three when if came to my flexibility of scheduling. I was also told that I argue with management. I was then asked to respond (this manager was reading from their template) as part of the review process. I responded that I disagreed with his assessment and that I was very flexible with my schedule, as this same person called me 3-4 times a week at home to change my schedule and I always accommodated him. He then proceeded to apparently adjust his score and then looked at me with no irony and said "There you go arguing with management again." WTF! As an aside it is a fact that vendors do pay for product placement (although the PCC in one of their newsletters denied such behavior). That is how their beer and wine buyer gets his free trip to Italy every year. They also wanted to loosen the rules on organic labeling in an issue that supported Horizon Dairy over Organic Valley (the PCC wanted a shorter time frame for cows to be declared "organic") .

Pros

customers are nice, Fremont market nearby was fun.

Cons

Worked in the deli; management and 'people-in-charge' were disrespectful and impatient. stress level was always high in the kitchen. Fremont location: managers are very mean! Not sure why they allow their managers to treat people so badly. I would avoid working at PCC at all costs, especially since the pay is very low. Also the training is very confusing: everyone doing things differently with no consistency or organization.
