Pros

The company has many older skilled workers with deep knowledge and the company dedicates significant resources to the training of entry level personnel. It is a good place to learn and improve technical skills especially for people entering the industry.

Cons

The senior leadership is chosen based on their perceived loyalty and alignment with the executive leadership ideals. The present senior leadership has little direct experience in dealing with people and have minimal if any, supervisory experience. Supervisors are told what ratings they are to give the underlings for performance appraisals and it weights most heavily on the arbitrary criteria of “behaviors” as measured against the executive leadership values. Knowledge skills, work output, customer service and working with peers is secondary. The president wants to change the culture of the company and one aspect is to hold people more accountable. While the goal is good, the senior leadership in their zeal and focus on pleasing the president, takes this to extreme and thus employees are evaluated mostly on how well they are conforming to the values and behavior tenants. When employees raise valid issues the employee is considered oppositional, defensive and quickly labeled non- conforming and the senior leadership quickly pounces on their supervisor. And the supervisor is given a poor evaluation for not keeping the employee in line. In other word, the senior leadership is fanatical in insuring that the executives do not perceive them as not being able to follow the executive behaviors expected. It is a very contentious and adversarial atmosphere. An one gains some time with the company, they need to consider their ideals and beliefs especially if one has aspirations of becoming a supervisor. If you have principals and you are not willing to put them aside in order to climb the corporate ladder, PPL Electric Utility is not the company for you.

Pros

Management is very focused on safety of its employees and emphasizing that consistently. I enjoy the work I do and I think it is meaningful. My direct line supervisor and VP are effective and seem to be good people that want to do the right thing. Salary is good, above average for the area. Great retirement contributions. Other benefits are OK, average or below average of what you would expect for Fortune 500.

Cons

The company lacks diversity in all management positions, with critical issues in the C suite, VP and director levels of both corporate and utilities. Practically devoid of minorities in leadership roles, this is the case across all upper level, and middle level management of both the corporate and utilities entities. Management clearly does not reflect either its customer base or their own workers demographics. I have been ghosted by recruiters both as an external candidate AND internal candidate (more than once in both situations). You expect the former, but the latter is severely problematic and speaks volumes. I want to believe it is individuals and not culture but nothing has told me that is the case. Recruiting process severely lacks professionalism. "If you don't enjoy what you do, then leave" is a common refrain which lacks introspection given management doesn't do much to help employees enjoy the work they do. Outside of the linemen (which deserve a lot of appreciation) appreciation for the work we do is minimal or completely absent. You will spend more time explaining minor or irrelevant mistakes to yelling managers than you will being appreciated for the work you do. A morale killing attitude, with innovation killing consequences.

Pros

Salary and benefits are good. Cost of benefits aren’t special and a little on the high side.

Cons

Driven by capital work. Everything contracted out and contractors dictate the terms to the company. Culture is one of fear and siloed. No one wants to own anything for fear of reprisals if wrong. If you’re fortunate to be on the in crowd you’ll do fine. If you can’t play office politics you won’t go anywhere. Capital spend is drying up and management is already talking budget cuts and layoffs. Age discrimination is rampant. There are no mangers over 50. Thank god I have only few years until retirement.
