Manager working at a bad company

Pros

Was a great place. Used to have hard work that was appreciated. Used to be free of politics. Used to be cooperative and fun.

Cons

Many departments, especially Sales, Sales Services, Engineering, Professional Services and TAC are stressed. New management has broken the good cooperative culture. Company seems filled with has-beens from Juniper, Cisco and NetApps recruiting the same teams who recreate their old processes and hiring/promoting the same folks who middle managed these once great companies into the ground.

Pros

Smart, engaged upper management. Huge span of control in the job. Dedicated workforce. Bias to pragmatic action.

Cons

A new group of VPS now on board in last 6 months. Unfortunately they lead through fear and dont have the skills to scale the company as expected. Most employees overworked and dispirited

Pros

The benefits are good, particularly the ability to take unlimited time off. The company is definitely in a space where there is continued demand and has a Sales organization that is overachieving. The new VP in Services is a leader.

Cons

There are pockets within the company that are good and enthusiastic. There are others, however, that are extremely toxic where a Sr. Director berates managers in front of their direct reports and so on down the line. There are managers who have no experience and as a result, micromanage otherwise capable employees. There are people in positions who have never done the job, only read about them in books. As a result, their expectations are simply whack. If you are not at HQ, then the career opportunities are not there.
