Blind leading the blind

Pros

A reasonable work life balance. A number of truly talented workers.

Cons

The C-team is inexperienced and hence oblivious of how to financially and strategically run a business. Company vision is actively shared and therefore transparent but is often vague and inaccurate. Favoritism is prevalent, career development is a joke, and communication is nonexistent. Expressing negative feedback and dissenting opinions are viewed as inappropriate and ill-mannered. Management will only value you on your ability to comply. Work is never accredited to the correct people and there's no true ownership of anything. Management is completely ignorant of how anything really works and therefore incompetent in making decisions.

Beautiful product and big opportunity ahead

Pros

- elegant designs and interesting partnerships - loyal customers/users - values self-expression both for users and employees - work life balance, especially compared to other NY startups - recognizing flaws and looking to fix them - shifting to going back to the "startup" days with more working across teams (vs. in silos) - new focus will allow for bigger opportunities for both the product/platform and the employees - leadership has become open to more feedback and have been asking for it more frequently and from all employees

Cons

- going through major changes right now, in strategy and structure, which can feel confusing at times and lead to some anxiety - recent layoff led to a morale dip, and we are trying to start the new chapter with greater alignment but won't be an easy shift, especially given the family feel of the culture - product and engineering haven't worked smoothly in the past with other teams but moving towards working together better

Pros

-Most of the employees and those in leadership positions are incredibly talented and have a great vision. They genuinely care about hiring the best and the brightest, and try to give an opportunity for their employees to flourish. -The workplace is both warm and welcoming (never got tired of walking into a grand, historic FiDi building with the gold embellishments and then stepping into the wood accented modern office with all the snacks you can dream of.) -The work/life balance is super solid and there is constant adjustment to try to make their employees as happy as possible with regards to benefits and career growth opportunities. Management usually takes inventory of the employees performance and needs. -The product is so unique and beautiful -- I was always excited to show new collections to family and friends.

Cons

-The company seems to have grown a bit too fast in the last couple of years, so it is having some trouble adjusting. Seems pretty normal for a start-up, though. It can be a little hard to navigate when there are employees on two different floors and you definitely won't know everyone at the company. -Some employees, especially those who are more introverted, complain that they are not being heard or don't have the courage to speak up. Managers need to encourage a more open communication, especially across different teams.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts (and I agree about the office!). While we’re past the stage where everyone knows everyone else we recently consolidated most of our team onto one floor to make it easier for teams to collaborate. We are working with managers around communication and it is good to know that some introverts feel it’s hard to speak up. That is something we can focus on and we'll work toward always being proactive with sharing or asking questions, rather than waiting for people to speak up.
